6 Norman W.H. Loui Donor Story Norman W.H. Loui Born and raised in Mānoa, Norman W. H. Loui was best known as one of the Loui brothers who owned Hawaiian Rent-All, Honolulu s largest equipment rental company for more than 40 years. After selling the business in 2003, Norman retired and was able to devote more time to his collection of 25 motorcycles and scooters and his love for fishing. Sadly, Norman passed away on April 21, 2006 at the age of 65, however his legacy lives on. One of his last wishes was to create a gift of hope for future generations of students at his alma mater, Honolulu Community College (Honolulu CC). Specifically, Norman wanted to provide financial support for students enrolled in the college s technical and trades programs. To help students fulfill their potential, Norman and his mother, Bernice Char Loui, created a charitable bequest to benefit Honolulu CC. Their historic gift of nearly $4 million was the largest single contribution to a UH community college ever. In recognition of this transformational gift, Honolulu CC s Kapalama Media Conference Center was renamed to the Norman W. H. Loui Conference Center. Ultimately, Norman laid the foundation for his legacy of hope. Story Starter 16

10 Professor Richard Linn Stevens Inspired by Professor Richard Linn Stevens dedication to the restoration of Hawai i s unique ecosystems, his son used a charitable bequest to create the Professor Richard Linn Stevens Endowed Scholarship Fund for Restoration in Professor Richard Linn Stevens, Ph.D., 84 & 90 the amount of $50,000 to honor his father s life mission. This scholarship, that his son also contributes to annually, will help support the tuition of University of Hawai i students who share in Professor Stevens spirit of protecting and restoring the glorious nature in Hawai i. Through the teachings of his Hawaiian hanai mother and father, Richard became a true local boy with a love of the islands. As a student at UH Mānoa, he learned the importance of protecting the future of Hawai i s ecosystems. Donor Story Q: When is the best time to plant a tree? A: 20 years ago. Q: When is the second best time to plant a tree? A: Now. Chinese Proverb Today, Richard brings his belief into action as a professor at UH West Hawai i by leading his students and other community members in numerous restoration projects. Over 25,000 planted trees, including those currently at the West Hawai i Veterans Cemetery, or the Arlington of the Pacific, are a testament to the power of one person s commitment to nature. 13 Gift from a Will or Revocable Living Trust (RLT) How to create a Will/RLT gift for UH Creating a charitable bequest to benefit the University of Hawai i through your will or revocable living trust is easy. Just follow the five simple steps below and give the attached Charitable Bequest Form to your attorney. He or she will do the rest! 1. Identify the area at UH you are passionate about and want to support. 2. Decide how much your gift will be. It can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. 3. Determine how long you want your gift to last. You can create an endowment account so your gift will continue in perpetuity or an expendable account, a gift that lasts for a limited period of time. 4. Complete the Charitable Bequest Form on page 8 and deliver it to your attorney. 5. Optional: Let our office create a Gift Agreement for you. A gift agreement is a written understanding signed by you, UH and UHF that will outline precisely how your gift is to be used and ensures that your wishes will be met and your gift properly administered in the future. 7 Office of Estate & Gift Planning

While working with Dr. Tamashiro, Nan-Yao formulated the integrated pest management approach to subterranean termite control on which the Sentricon system is based. He went on to become a distinguished authority on termite behavior, ecology and control, and is the inventor of a top-selling termite bait product. I was very fortunate to have an excellent mentor at UH, Dr. Minoru Tamashiro, who showed me the path to science. Now that I am in a position to give back, I hope to provide something for students to broaden their horizons. Dr. Nan-Yao Su Heritage Society members Nan-Yao and his wife, Jill, have established the Nan-Yao and Jill Su Endowed Fund for Entomology at the UH Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). Their gift will support students at CTAHR with scholarships, awards, research and travel to conferences. To start this fund, Nan-Yao and Jill gave $35,000 to create an endowed scholarship and established a charitable lead trust that will generate an additional $90,000 for the endowed scholarship over the next 15 years. 18 Lynne Kaneshiro I hope with my gift the students can feel proud to work with new equipment and in new, improved classroom facilities. I m proud to be part of the Kapi olani CC ohana. Lynne Kaneshiro Donor Story Lynne Kaneshiro was a former student of one of Chef Grant Sato s popular culinary classes at Kapi olani Community College (Kapi olani CC). Inspired by the teachings of Chef Sato, Lynne created a charitable lead trust that will benefit the Kapi olani CC Culinary Arts Renovations and Equipment Fund. This gift will help finance renovations, upgrades and equipment purchases for the Culinary Arts Department. Before her adventures in culinary class, she was a leader in the business community. Lynne began her career in 1969 with First American Title Company of Hawai i. By the time she was 26, she became the youngest executive vice president of the company. After gaining valuable experience in the industry, Lynne set out on her own path. She founded Island Title Corporation, a title insurance and escrow company, in 1982 and served as its chairman, president and CEO until Indeed, Lynne showed that she can cook in the business world, too. I m very thankful to Lynne for her gift to the Culinary Arts Program at Kapi olani CC. She has inspired us all with this wonderful gift. Chef Grant Sato, ' 97 Story Starter 10
