International reach of the JORC Code and the CRIRSCO family of reporting codes and standards Peter Stoker, Principal Geologist AMC Consultants Pty Ltd IMARC Melbourne 25 September 2014
Outline Use of the JORC Code internationally CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) reporting codes and standards Other related standards and codes and countries Relationship of CRIRSCO Template with national reporting standards Relationship of CRIRSCO with the ICMM (International Council on Mining and Metals)
Use of the JORC Code internationally The JORC Code is the required reporting code for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources, and ore reserves in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. The JORC Code is an accepted standard (along with other specified CRIRSCO codes and standards) for reporting to the Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange. When reconciled with the CIM Definition Standards, the JORC Code is an acceptable standard for reporting in Canada.
CRIRSCO reporting codes and standards in addition to the JORC Code: National Instrument (NI) and the CIM Definition Standards SAMREC (The South African Mineral Resource Committee) Code PERC (Pan-European Reserves & Resources Reporting Committee) Standard Russian NAEN (National Association for Subsoil Examination) Code Chilean Certification Code for Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources, and Ore Reserves USA SME (Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.) Guide, note that SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) require Industry Guide 7 The CRIRSCO International Reporting Template, used as a reference and a guide to countries wishing to develop their own reporting standard.

What is CRIRSCO? Committee that standardizes definitions of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and encourages uniformity between reporting standards of member countries. Members from Australia, Canada, Chile, Europe, Russia, South Africa, and USA Recognized by banks and stock exchanges in Australia, South Africa, Canada, UK, Europe, USA, Chile, Hong Kong, and Singapore
National Reporting Standards Maintained by National Reporting Organizations in member countries. Must follow CRIRSCO template requirements for public reporting: - Transparency - Materiality - Prepared by Competent or Qualified Person

Philippines and Indonesia and Mongolia In both the Philippines and Indonesian, codes which are based on translations of the JORC Code are now recognised. The Philippines Mineral Reporting Code (PMRC) has been recognised and mandated for use within the Philippines by the stock exchange and government regulators. The professional bodies are registering Competent Persons to report in accordance with the PMRC. In Indonesia, the KCMI (Komite Cadangan Mineral Indonesia) Code has been promulgated by the professional bodies. The Indonesian Stock Exchange listing rules requiring its use in reports to are awaiting approval by the corporate regulator. In the meantime, the professional bodies are registering Competent Persons and the government is actively seeking to mandate the KCMI Code for reporting to government..
The PMRC and KCMI: CRIRSCO-compliant Codes
Mongolia and others The Mongolian Mineral Resources and Reserves Committee (MRC) is well-advanced in the preparation of the MRC Code, the Mongolian Code for the Public Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. It has also moved to establish a professional body and a national reporting organisation. It is possible Mongolia will join CRIRSCO in A number of other countries are actively pursuing the process to become accepted as members of CRIRSCO.
Relationship of the CRIRSCO Template with national reporting standards CRIRSCO is the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards, whose members currently include: Australasia, Canada, Chile, Europe, Russia, South Africa, and the United States of America. The combined value of mining companies listed on the stock exchanges of these countries accounts for more than 80% of the listed capital of the mining industry. CRIRSCO has developed an International Reporting Template that contains a set of agreed standard definitions, which will be common in all CRIRSCO-compatible codes and standards. All the CRIRSCO-compatible codes and standards contain the same classification of resources and reserves and show this in a near identical Figure 1 in each Code. Note there are minor differences in the names Ore Reserves versus Mineral Reserves, Proved Reserves versus Proven Reserves but the definitions are, or will be, the same.

Relationship of CRIRSCO Template with other reporting CRIRSCO has engaged with the Society of Petroleum Engineers to produce the CRIRSCO-SPE Mapping Report, which links the CRIRSCO Template to the SPE PRMS (Petroleum Resources Management System 2007). The objective was to demonstrate the similarity of minerals and petroleum reporting systems and definitions. This has enabled CRIRSCO-SPE to have the CRIRSCO Template and the SPE PRMS recognised as the commodity-specific Codes of the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) of CRIRSCO-SPE have been involved in advising the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) on the development of new International Financial Reporting Standards for the Extractive Industries.
Relationship of CRIRSCO with the ICMM ICMM is a CEO-led industry group that addresses key priorities and emerging issues within the sector. It seeks to play a leading role by promoting good practice and improved performance internationally and across different commodities. CRIRSCO formed an alliance in 2007 with the ICMM and became a Task Force of that organisation charged with promoting and maintaining best practice reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. In October 2009, CRIRSCO became a Strategic Partner of ICMM. CRIRSCO s work with UNFC and the IASB is of direct benefit to members of ICMM.
Conclusions The use of the JORC Code and the related CRIRSCO family of codes and standards means that mining activities on stock exchanges that account for more than 80% of the listed capital of the mining industry are reported using these transparent marketrelated standards. These Codes and standards have common standard definitions and are becoming increasing recognised as the means of providing investors with transparent information on which to base decisions.
Acknowledgments To my colleagues from JORC and JORC s parent bodies for assistance over time with preparation of much of the material used in this session today. Those parent bodies are: And to my CRIRSCO colleagues: which is a strategic partner of And also to my employer AMC Consultants Pty Ltd.
