1 2015 Annual Report

2 Message from the Patron It is a pleasure and a privilege to be a Co-Patron of the Trust and to see Peter s legacy go from strength to strength. From 600+ Leadership Week events and ocean exploration with Young Blake Expeditions, the Trust has a growing network of leaders and young Environmental Stewards all working hard in their communities. Sir Peter was a proud New Zealander, all round leader and a man of action. More than a decade on, this Kiwi hero s legacy continues to inspire New Zealanders of all ages through the efforts of the Trust. To inspire and mobilise the next generation of Kiwi leaders, adventurers and environmentalists is a mission that I fully support. I have enjoyed being actively involved in Trust activities since Highlights include officiating at the Blake Leadership Awards where the calibre of leaders honoured in Peter s name and their achievements demonstrates the difference that great leadership makes to a country. The theme for Leadership Week this year was #Believeyoucan. I think this is a fitting tribute to Peter s own leadership style. The need to have audacious aspirations and dreams and then really back yourself and your team to achieve them was important to him. What s unique about the Trust is our people, our partners and our programmes. An unparalleled network allows the Trust team to ensure that its experiential programmes are truly life changing. I watch with interest and excitement to see what great adventures lie ahead for the Trust in the coming year. Pippa, Lady Blake, Co-Patron, Sir Peter Blake Trust. Pippa, Lady Blake The Legacy Continues The aspirations of the Trust, the Blake Family and Blake Leaders to deliver on Peter s legacy show no signs of slowing down. This year has seen Young Blake Expeditions continue its work in the Southern Ocean and focus efforts on a region critical to our understanding of climate and ocean changes. Engaging young leaders to commence work on a national research station with leading NZ Scientists in the Sub-Antarctic is an ambitious dream but one worth pursuing. The success of the Rotorua urban expedition with Ministry for Environment saw 50 young Environmental Leaders from across the country focus on fresh water management and eco-tourism. That these delegates were inspired to raise funds for local pest eradication in the Mamaku forest is testament to the desire of young people to take action on key environmental issues. Partnerships with like-minded organisations have flourished with NIWA, RNZN and Chapman Tripp extending their support of the Trust and MediaWorks Foundation coming on board as a Media partner. Having Pippa Lady Blake back in New Zealand was a highlight as she participated in the national Leadership Awards and undertook Leadership events in Christchurch and Auckland. For the 20th Anniversary of Red Socks, Pippa recounted the original story of giving Peter Red Socks and her surprise that they have gone on to become a national treasure. Sincere thanks go to the Trustees, advisors, sponsors and supporters of the Sir Peter Blake Trust who tirelessly support the Trust to ensure the organisation is on strategy, vibrant and fit for purpose. Special mention should be made of the small but hard working management team whose ability to innovate and commitment to excellence are critical to the Trusts strong reputation and success.

4 2015 Financial Commentary Schools, community groups, corporates and individuals across New Zealand contributed to the success of the Trust in 2015 with sponsorship, grants, donations and purchases of red socks. In particular, the Trust acknowledges the strong financial support of foundation partner Westpac New Zealand Ltd and leading partner Fuji Xerox New Zealand Ltd. The Trust s innovative programmes continue to provide life changing opportunities for our youth, and to celebrate the achievements of New Zealand s leaders across many sectors. The financial contributions from the Trust s sponsors, supporters and the people of New Zealand, together with the investment income generated from the Trust funds, provided $1.2million in revenue. The Trust has a welldiversified income base, with 32 % of income from sponsorships, grants and donations from strong community support, and 33% from investment of the Trust Funds. Through careful management, delivery of the Trust s programmes saw total expenses remain relatively stable. Overall, the Trust achieved a Net Surplus of $44,265. Trust funds now stand at $4.9 million. While this puts the Trust in a good financial position, the Board is concerned with the need to fund current programmes, while protecting the value of the Trust funds for future generations. The Board continues to seek new strategic partnerships and avenues of fundraising, which will enable it to provide the resources for programmes to inspire generations of future leaders, particularly in the area of environmental protection. A new strategic partnership with Media Works Foundation, announced in August 2015, has provided exciting opportunities for the Trust to tell our story and engage with New Zealand communities. For more detailed information, see over. For the full financial statements see our website, The Trust s activities would not have been possible without the financial support of: Foundation Partner: Westpac New Zealand Ltd.
