5 Volunteer program started in 2014 with 2 volunteers Original goal was to teach individuals how to file their own income tax returns How we started Recognizing that not everyone would have the comfort level needed to file their own return (either through paper returns or online) We expanded our goal to include assisting in filing yearly income tax returns We don t look at a clients income when assisting clients filing their income taxes.

19 Challenges: Lengthy wait times (ie. T1 Adjustment). Challenges Canada Revenue Agency Communication after documentation is submitted The wording in correspondence is confusing (ie. OTB) Clients not understand their Notice of Assessment (what does it mean and why its important)
20 Increased number of volunteers Volunteers who speak the language Successes The program has increased the number of: community members using the service; those aware of the service and those recommending the service. Support from local organizations Assisting clients to: file back years; dealing with clients being reassessed by the CRA; completing T1 adjustment forms; and writing letters to CRA for tax related issues (i.e. debt relief, requesting tax slips, pension amounts on-reserve)
21 Community members are accessing government benefits Successes Community members becoming more aware of our services (WDC LDM) and starting to access these services. Partnering with our Energy Planner to assist clients apply for the OESP program for a energy rebate.

26 Pension Income: T4A (P) Pension Income Income earned on-reserve claimed as income in box 16 on T4A(P) Tax slips. How we have assisted clients in our community: Assisting clients providing documentation to the CRA and helping the client submit T1Adjustments to correct forms.
27 T4RIF s Individuals are purchasing RRSP s, which turn into RIF s and LIF s Individuals paying taxes on income earned on-reserve. T4RIF S Pension Income: No box on a T4RIF to verify/report income earned onreserve. How we have assisted clients in our community: Assisting clients provide documentation to the CRA and helping the client submit T1Adjustments.
