1 The Millennial Perspective: An Intergenerational Discussion on Retirement Solutions Tuesday, June 28, 2016 Speaker Bios The Honorable Phyllis Borzi As Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Labor, Phyllis is head of the Employee Benefits Security Administration. Phyllis not only oversees issues related to pensions and retirement plans, but also helps to enforce part of the health care reform law as it pertains to businesses. Additionally, she is the nation s leading expert on the law that governs workplace benefits, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). Phyllis has published numerous articles on ERISA, health care law and policy, and retirement security issues and has been a frequent speaker to legal, professional, business, consumer and state and local governmental organizations. An active member of the American Bar Association, she is the former chair of the ABA s Joint Committee on Employee Benefits. Phyllis earned her Bachelor of Arts from Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, New York, her Master of Arts degree in English from Syracuse University, and her JD from Catholic University Law School, where she was editor-in-chief of the law review. Larry Burton Larry is the Chief Operating Officer for the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI). Larry coordinates ACLI's state, federal and international advocacy. From 2012 to 2015, Larry was senior vice president of government affairs at CVS Health. Prior to that, he served as executive director of the Business Roundtable. In 1987, Larry began a 17-year career at BP America, rising to the position of vice president of external affairs. He also has extensive Capitol Hill and federal government experience. He has held senior positions with U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) and former U.S. Senate Assistant Majority Leader Ted Stevens (R-Alaska). Larry also was a special assistant and associate director for the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, where he served as senior liaison to the Senate on budget and regulatory matters. Larry received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and government from Lewis and Clark University and a Masters of Business Administration in finance from The George Washington University. 1
2 Sarah Holden Sarah is Senior Director of Retirement and Investor Research for the Investment Company Institute (ICI). She leads the Institute s research efforts on investor demographics and behavior and retirement and tax policy. Sara, who joined ICI in 1999, heads efforts to track trends in household retirement saving activity and ownership of funds as well as other investments inside and outside retirement accounts. Prior to joining ICI, she served as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Sara has a PhD in economics from the University of Michigan and a BA in mathematics and economics from Smith College. Cindy Hounsell Cindy is the President of the Washington D.C.- based Women s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER), a nonprofit organization that she founded in 1996 to improve opportunities for women to secure retirement income. An attorney and retirement expert, Ms. Hounsell has been widely quoted in various media and publications including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes/PBS Next Avenue, U.S. News and World Report, CNN, CNBC and NPR s All Things Considered, Morning Edition and Marketplace. In 2015, she was named an Influencer in Aging by Next Avenue/PBS. The Influencers in Aging list highlights 50 thought leaders, researchers, experts, executives and everyday people who are redefining what it means to grow older in America. Ms. Hounsell has testified before Congress and has served as a delegate for a number of White House summits and conferences. She has authored many chapters, columns, articles, op-eds, papers and booklets on women and retirement. Ms. Hounsell provides technical assistance to several national organizations as well as training leaders and grassroots advocates as director of the National Resource Center for Women and Retirement Planning, in partnership with the U.S. Administration on Aging. Mark Iwry Mark is Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury and is the Deputy Assistant Secretary (Tax Policy) for Retirement and Health Policy at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Mark was previously a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, research professor at Georgetown University, Of Counsel to the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, and a principal of the Retirement Security Project. He was the Treasury Department's Benefits Tax Counsel from 1995 to 2001, serving as the principal official directly responsible for tax policy and regulation relating to the Nation s qualified pension and 401(k) plans, employer-sponsored health plans, deferred compensation, and other employee benefits. Mark is an honors graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, and received a Master s in Public Policy from Harvard s Kennedy School. 2
3 Michael Kreps Michael is a principal at Groom Law Group, where he counsels employers, plan sponsors, financial institutions, trade associations, and coalitions on retirement, health, tax, and employment matters. He specializes in issues relating to public policy, fiduciary responsibility, and plan funding and restructuring. Previously, Michael served as the Senior Pensions and Employment Counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions from the 110th through the 114th Congresses. In that role, he managed all aspects of the Committee s retirement agenda and had primary staff responsibility for pension legislation, including the pension investment provisions of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Michael holds a JD, with honors, from The George Washington University Law School and a BA, with distinction, in history and art history from the University of Colorado. Jim Mahaney Jim is a Vice President with the Strategic Initiatives unit of Prudential. Jim s focus is currently in the area of research and thought leadership for the firm. In this capacity, he has authored several research papers primarily focused on retirement-related issues. Jim has been active as an invited speaker sharing ideas on integrating retirement savings and Social Security. Due to his unique expertise in this area, Jim s work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger s Retirement Planning Guide, Retirement Weekly, USA Today and Forbes as well as the book, The Wall Street Journal Complete Retirement Guidebook: How to Plan It, Live It and Enjoy It. In 2006, Jim was part of a small group of individuals that designed and launched the first guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit for the 401(k) market. Jim holds a bachelors degree from Denison University, and masters of science degrees in Financial Services and in Management from The American College. Spencer Pringle Spencer is Executive Vice President of Retirement Clearinghouse and is responsible for business-to-consumer strategy, service, operations, and product management and development. He serves as president of the firm's Broker Dealer, as well as the Chief Compliance Officer. Spencer brings more than 21 years of financial services industry experience to Retirement Clearinghouse, most recently as a Director at Fidelity Investments, where he led several functions including their High Net Worth, Mass Affluent, and Small Business Retirement organizations. Previously, at T. Rowe Price, Spencer was Vice President of Retirement Plan Services, overseeing their 401(k) service centers nationally. Spencer earned his B.A. degree in Economics from the University of South Florida. His principal licenses include Municipal Securities, General Securities, and General Security Sales. He is also a registered Life Insurance agent. 3
4 Joe Ready Joe is Executive Vice President and Director of Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust. In this role, he has responsibility for products and services for more than 5,200 employer-sponsored retirement plans and custody accounts with 3.8 million employees. Joe has more than 25 years of leadership experience in relationship management, sales, investments, trust administration, operations and systems. He has served in a variety of leadership roles in the institutional and investment areas including the mutual funds business, pension and employee benefits and institutional custody division. Joe is currently president and a board member of The SPARK Institute, Inc. He also serves on the board of directors for the LIMRA/LOMA Secure Retirement Institute. He earned a bachelor's degree from Franklin and Marshall College. Andy Remo Andy is the Director of Legislative Affairs, American Retirement Association. He is responsible for directing the American Retirement Association's legislative initiatives before Congress and state legislatures with the objective of influencing public policymakers on issues important to our members and advancing our legislative goals. Andy received at BA in Political Science from American University and a Masters in Government/Business Administration from John Hopkins University. Dallas Salisbury Dallas is President Emeritus at the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and Senior Fellow. Dallas serves on a number of advisory groups and boards. He is currently a Social Security Administration Appointee to the Outside Scholar Panels for the SSA's Financial Literacy Research Consortium, the Securities and Exchange Commission Investor Advisory Committee, the Board of Advisors to the Comptroller General of the United States, and the Board of Directors of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources and a member of the Board of Directors of NAHR. He has served on the Secretary of Labor's ERISA Advisory Council, the presidentiallyappointed PBGC Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors of the Society for Human Resources Management, the U.S. Advisory Panel on Medicare Education, the Board of Directors of the National Academy of Social Insurance, and numerous other commissions and advisory groups. Prior to joining EBRI, Dallas held full-time positions with the Washington State Legislature, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Employee Benefits Security Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor, and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. He holds a B.A. in finance from the University of Washington and an M.P.A. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Dallas grew up in Everett, Washington, and now resides in Washington, D.C. 4
5 Patrice Willoughby Patrice is with Heather Podesta +Partners. She combines more than a decade of experience in both the Executive Branch and on Capitol Hill, with a focus on health care, tax, energy, and federal contracting issues. Patrice most recently served in the Obama Administration as the Deputy Associate Administrator for Policy in the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs, where she focused on government-wide acquisition and small business policy and the federal real estate portfolio. Before GSA, Patrice served as Executive Director of the Congressional Black Caucus. She also served nine years in the office of the late Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH), including five years as Chief of Staff and Counsel. 5
