4 Key performance indicators (KPI) updates and other significant updates 1 The 2,395 new businesses under 2 years old in Wiltshire represents a survival rate of 94.2%, this is higher than nationally where new businesses under 2 years old have a survival rate of 92.2% and higher than Wiltshire's statistical neighbours (93%). This data was sourced from the Business Demography 2015 released November 2016.
5 2 There were 1485 jobs created in the second quarter 2016/17. A brief breakdown of some of the jobs is as follows: 40 through The Enterprise Network, <5 through Heart of Wessex Leader grants, <5 through Vale Action, 1100 through Visit Wiltshire, 300 in the property and construction sector and 40 in the retail sector. There are approximately 235 potential jobs in the pipeline. This measure only reflects new jobs created with direct Wiltshire Council involvement. This data was sourced from the Economic Development and Planning Performance figures for Q2 (Jul-Sep), 2016/17. 3 The average resident in Wiltshire has increased and now earns a week, which ranks the county joint 82 nationally. This amount is lower than the national average ( per week) as well as the counties statistical neighbours ( ), and the gap between Wiltshire and its statistical neighbours average has increased. This measure refers to Wiltshire residents who commute out of the county and are
6 generally better paid. This data is sourced from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings. Resident analysis via NOMIS for Wiltshire workplaces pay significantly less than its statistical neighbours ( per week) and the national average ( per week). This measure refers to the pay rate for jobs within the county. Last year Wiltshire was ranked 97 nationally. This data is sourced from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings. 7 Wiltshire is back to pre-recession levels for the amount of people claiming at least one form of out of work benefit (16,210 individuals). The main out-of-work benefits include the groups: job seekers, ESA and incapacity benefits, lone parents and others on income related benefits. Wiltshire compares favourably with the national average (8.7%) and also better than its statistical neighbours (6.0%). Wiltshire has been running a pilot programme targeting more intensive support collaborating with NHS, CCG, to support people into sustainable work, and working with employers to support them to take on older workers. Healthier trainers in Job Centres are also being piloted in Chippenham. Wiltshire is ranked well nationally at 22. 8 Wiltshire has only 12,010 individuals claiming Employment Support Allowance, which represents 4.1% of the counties working age (16-64) population. This figure compares favourably with national levels (6.2%) and is back to pre-recession levels; it is also slightly better than Wiltshire's statistical neighbours (4.5%). The amount has remained largely static, with an early intervention strategy in place to contact ESA claimants earlier. As of February Wiltshire was one of the topped ranked counties nationally, ranking joint 26 out of 152. This ranks Wiltshire joint 64 nationally and is better than its statistical neighbours (89.8%) and the national average (90.4%). 9 Apprenticeship starts have increased by almost 20% compared to the previous year, which is the 2nd largest growth in Apprenticeship starts for a Local Education Authority (LEA) in the Country. More are required from the Local Authority as a large employer to invest in Apprenticeships, drive growth and raise standards through supply chains and by example. Per 1000 population aged years old, Wilshire had 22 Apprenticeship starts in 2015/16, this compares very well against its statistical neighbours, with only Shropshire (23.4) and Dorset (24.0) having more Apprenticeship starts. This full year data 2015/16 is sourced from the FE: Data Library and County Populations sourced from Nomis. 19 Wiltshire had 55% (85 individuals) of its care leavers aged in education, employment or training. This has continued to be significantly better than Wiltshire's statistical neighbours (44.2%) and national average (49%). For this measure Wiltshire is ranked 44 nationally out of 152 counties. This full year data 2015/16 is sourced from the FE: Data Library No. of Higher Apprenticeship starts % of Key Stage Two pupils achieving Reading, Writing & Maths at expected standard % of Key Stage Two pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds achieving Reading, Writing and Maths at the expected standard 140 Wiltshire had a 40% increase in people starting a higher Apprenticeship in 2015/16 compared to the previous year. A higher Apprenticeship means an apprentice will work towards completing a level 4+ qualification. This full year data 2015/16 is sourced from the FE: Data Library % This is the first year of assessment for the new national curriculum since it was introduced in The results are no longer reported as levels but as scaled scores. 54% of Wiltshire students achieved the expected level in reading, writing and maths which matches the average nationally, and Wiltshire has performed better than its statistical neighbours (51.5%). Wiltshire is ranked 69 nationally, out of the 152 counties. This data was sourced from LAIT December % This is the first year of assessment for the new national curriculum since it was introduced in The results are no longer reported as levels but as scaled scores. 33% of Wiltshire students from disadvantaged backgrounds achieved the expected level in reading, writing and maths which is significantly lower than the national average (39%), but Wiltshire has performed better than its statistical neighbours (31.6%). Wiltshire is ranked 122 nationally, out of the 152 counties. This data was sourced from LAIT December % of Unknown & Expired 3.7% Wiltshire's Unknown rate almost halved compared to the previous 7.0% month for those individuals academic aged who are unknown or expired to the Local Authority (representing 386 individuals). This level is lower than the national average (5.2%) and statistical neighbours average (5.8%). This is an improvement on the previous year, when Wiltshire had an unknown & expired rate of 7.0%.
