2 SuperRatings Fund Crediting Rate Survey - Definitions and Assumptions Background Launched in June 2003, the SuperRatings Fund Crediting Rate Survey provides comprehensive coverage of superannuation investment performance for Australia's major Master Trusts and Not for Profit funds. Released monthly, SuperRatings Fund Crediting Rate Survey covers all traditional investment options. These include: Default, High Growth (91-100), Growth (77-90), Balanced (60-76), Conservative Balanced (41-59), Capital Stable (20-40), Secure (0-19), Australian Shares, International Shares, Property, Diversified Fixed Interest and Cash Options. The SuperRatings Fund Crediting Rate Survey provides transparency through the identification of actual returns to members, rather than traditional surveys which have focused on underlying investment manager returns, figures which generally have little relevance to members. The survey represents only a small portion of the data collected by SuperRatings and forms part of our overall assessment of each of the major superannuation funds in Australia. Index Eligibility and Definitions Investment Performance: s displayed (from 1 month through to 10 years p.a.), are calculated net of investment fees, tax and implicit asset-based administration fees. Explicit fees such as fixed dollar administration fees, exit fees, contribution fees and switching fees are excluded. SuperRatings "Fund Option" Indices: SuperRatings indices are calculated monthly and are regularly quoted in the financial press. Indices are calculated for all major investment options and provide a consistent measure of performance, similar to major equity and bond market indices. Eligibility criteria for index inclusion are based on: Option size - the main determinant of index eligibility. Minimum performance history of 3 years. Regularity in submitting returns by the due date. Sector diversity - considered during index reviews, and may at times take precedence over option size considerations. SuperRatings aim in this approach is to, where possible, maintain indices that are diversified across Master Trust and Not for Profit superannuation funds. Growth Asset : This represents an option s exposure to growth-style assets, using fund s most recently available Strategic Asset Allocations. The proportion of Growth-style assets should be provided and verified by participating funds and should be consistent with their Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) or other publications. Default Option: nominated by a Fund as the default option for members not making an explicit choice. High Growth (91-100) Option: a fund option with a growth assets ratio between 91% and 100%. These are typically diversified fund options, but can also include options invested in both Australian and International shares. Growth (77-90) Option: a diversified fund option with a growth assets ratio between 77% and 90%. Balanced (60-76) Option: a diversified fund option with a growth assets ratio between 60% and 76%. Conservative Balanced (41-59) Option: a diversified fund option with a growth assets ratio between 41% and 59%. Capital Stable (20-40) Option: a diversified fund option with a growth assets ratio between 20% and 40%. Secure (0-19) Option: a fund option with a growth assets ratio between 0% and 19%. Can also include Cash type options invested in securities other than short-term money market bank bill securities and term deposits (such as mortgage backed securities, asset back securities and other Australian and offshore corporate debt securities). Assumptions Performance data displayed in the Fund Crediting Rate Survey is sourced directly from participating superannuation funds, as well as through publicly available sources. Performance figures calculated in the survey are presented to comply with IFSA Standard No.6 and are provided to two decimal places. A ranking result is finalised before rounding. It is assumed that net return calculations are based on hard close exit prices or comparable prices where a super fund does not calculate a hard close exit price. Rolling period returns are annualised, whereas one-month and quarterly returns are compounded and rounded to two decimal places. 2
