2 EPF NEWS France: Official website for abortion information Former EPF Vice President Paris - A State run website has been launched to provide accurate abortion related information. Former EPF Vice President and current Chair of the Equality Council of France, Danielle Bousquet, had previously issued a report on the worrying amount of incorrect abortion related information available on the internet. She issued a recommendation, which has now been acted upon, that there be a special state website with correct information. Read More Milestone ruling against Italy on abortion and conscientious objection Strasbourg, 7 March - There has been a milestone decision on conscientious objection and abortion delivered by the Council of Europe s Committee of Social Rights. IPPF EN lodged a collective complaint against Italy, which stated that the weak regulation of health personnel s conscientious objection violates the right to health protection. The claim has been successful. Read More African Parliamentarians Reaffirm Commitment to Gender Equality Abidjan - Following a three-day meeting in Cote d Ivoire, the Forum of African Parliamentarians on Population and Development (FPA) reaffirmed their commitment to gender equality, women empowerment, elimination of violence against women, as well as to achieve universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, free from all forms of discrimination. Committee
3 During the meeting held from March the parliamentarians, including EPF President Baroness Jenny Tonge, also pledged to eliminate preventable maternal mortality, by ensuring universal access to family planning, and management of preventable complications arising from unsafe abortion. In their declaration they pledge to use the Common African Position (CAP) on the Post 2015 Development Agenda to speak with one voice and to act in unity to ensure that Africa s voice is heard and is fully integrated into the global development agenda. EPF SECRETARIAT S RECENT ACTIVITIES IPCI 2014 Stockholm - The 6th International Parliamentarians Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action (IPCI) is currently taking place in Stockholm. Lifetime achievement award for Dilys Cossey London, 14 March - One of EPF s founding members, Dilys Cossey OBE, has received a lifetime achievement award at the UK Sexual Health Awards The awards were presented by top comic, novelist and actor Jenny Eclair at a ceremony in central London. Showcasing the best creative and innovative work, the UK Sexual Health Awards is the only event of its kind to celebrate achievements in the field of sexual health. Watch the full programme here NEWS FROM OUR APPGS Germany: First meeting of reformed APPG in 2014 Berlin - The first meeting of the German APPG since the autumn elections has taken place. 5 Lisbon, 28 March - The Portuguese APPG hosted a parliamentary consultation on completion of the ICPD PoA and the MDG processed and Portugal s contribution to these processes. A number of MPs spoke during the course of the event, specifying the actions necessary for real progress. UK: Baroness Jenny Tonge on UK immigration bill and maternity care London, 10 March - Baroness Jenny Tonge on was quoted in the Evening Standard newspaper on the UK immigration bill and maternity care in the UK. Pregnant women and children coming to the UK as migrants should be exempted from a proposed health care surcharge, Baroness Tonge insisted. Read more here Romania: APPG member participates in Asian African MPs event Kampala - Upon invitation from the Asian Population and Development Association (APDA)/Japan Parliamentarians Federation for Population (JPFP), Senator Florian-Dorel BODOG, Member of the Romania APPG, participated at the second Part of the Asian and African Parliamentarians Capacity Development Project on the Integration of Population Issues into National Development Frameworks The event was organised in Kampala, from 10 to 13 February 2014, and was hosted by the Uganda Parliamentarians Forum on Food Security, Population and Development (UPFFSP&D). During the first session of the meeting, on the theme Assessment of the Global Population Trends: Continental Perspectives in Addressing Population Issues, Senator Bodog made a key-note presentation entitled Population of Europe: dynamics and prospects. Irish APPG organises International Women s Day photo Exhibition
6 Dublin - To mark International Women s Day in March 2014 and to celebrate Cairo+20, the Irish APPG held an exhibition entitled Putting Women s and Girls Reproductive Health at the Heart of Development Policy. Launched at Dublin s Mansion House by the Minster of State for Development and Trade, Mr Joe Costello T.D., at a special event for parliamentarians and development agencies, the exhibition was displayed at the Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre during the month of March and viewed by over 900 people. Twenty-two members of the APPG participated 10% of all members of parliament. Each member selected a photo that resonated with her or him, and wrote a short personal text highlighting the need for the issue illustrated to be addressed in the post-2015 framework. The exhibition was funded and supported by the UN Population Fund, UNFPA, which also kindly permitted the use of photographs.
