2 President s Report Dear Brothers and Sisters, Last month, I wrote about Right to Work (for less) legislation. What was unknown at the time was that the battle for union rights was about to be fully upon us and those in our Capitol who oppose unions altogether thought they were ready for a fight. We had suspected the fight would come at some point, but we didn t think it would come quite this fast. Members from your legislative committee and a Rep. from District 10 had started meeting to discuss RTW legislation and how to get the word out to the membership and community in conjunction with the SCFL (South Central Federation of Labor). Then Gov. Walker introduced his Budget Repair Bill. That Thursday night we meet with other unions in the AFL-CIO, including the Ironworkers, AFSCME, and a Building Trades Rep. to plan our strategy. Since that Friday afternoon, the game has been on. Immediately we started coordinating with other unions in the likes of which I haven t seen before. What was at stake: The rights of numerous workers to collectively bargain! We put together a series of rallies that included: Sun. Feb 13 we marched from 873 with numerous other union members, family and friends through downtown Horicon to Rep. Jeff Fitzgerald s house. We were met there with cameras from channel 12 news. Brother Colin Millard (Ironworkers), Sister Janice Bobholz (AFSCME) and I each gave speeches to a crowd of about 125 people. On Monday, Feb 14, we held another rally that started in Juneau and ended at Sen. Scott Fitzgerald s house, that crowd was considerably larger! Since then, various events have been held, including Breakfast with Fitz, (a few of our retirees went to Sen. Fitzgerald s house at 7am, set up a table and chairs, had coffee and rolls laid out) and invited the State Senator to have some coffee and discuss the events that were unfolding. The Senator did decline the invitation, but his dog did come over and didn t want to leave! After that, we have managed to help mobilize workers (union and non-union), family, friends, business owners, city mayors and community leaders to stand for workers rights. While the Budget Repair Bill has numerous flawed issues in it, we as a union, have taken the stance to oppose it on the basis that it strips workers rights to bargain for almost everything but wages (which have restrictions of them as well). There are some people in our world that don t understand what the issue is and do not realize what is all bargained for at work other than wages. Here s a short summary of what we bargain for at JDHW: Shift hours, breaks, overtime and premium pay, holidays, fair distribution of overtime, seniority, wages, vacation, leave of absence, FMLA, safety rules, union representation, the ability to file a grievance, grievance procedures, lockouts, jury duty, bereavement, subcontracting, apprenticeships, training, work processes, job classifications, disciplinary procedures, health benefits, pensions, disability insurance, sub pay, life insurance, 401k s, attendance policies, bonuses, cost of living allowances, profit sharing, co./union cooperation and initiatives, and this list is not all inclusive but you get the idea. It seems some people are so used to going to work and doing what they are told to do (probably under intimidation or threat of getting fired) that they don t even think about how they can better themselves and their coworkers in their place of employment. That is sad, not only for them, but for all those in their communities. I know that there are many members who voted for Gov. Walker and the Fitzgerald brothers, and I respect their right to choose. But now that the public sector union workers are directly under attack, I m fairly certain that we will be next, and that is why we must stop them now. Brothers and Sisters make no mistake; we are center stage in the fight across the country for workers rights. We cannot sit back in our comfortable chairs and watch any longer. We must fight this battle, win, loose or draw, they have united us with other workers all across the country like never before seen in my lifetime. We are the Fighting Machinists, and we will not back down because we realize that an attack on one, is an attack on us all! For rally updates and the latest information, the fastest way for us to communicate is through your stewards, and on facebook. So talk with your stewards and friend us on facebook: Horicon Machinists. Wed:sign making at 873 4:30pm, Thurs: Rally at 873 4:45pm. Make your voices heard! In Solidarity, Brian Brath
3 Shop Committee Report Health Risk Assessment Several members have asked when the $300 Health Risk Assessment survey will take place. The Shop Committee met with management on February 11, 2011 to discuss health care topics including the risk assessment. While final details are still being worked out, the assessment is being planned for mid March through the end of April. Communication of the process will take place in the next few weeks, please watch for a mailing from the company pertaining to this issue. Employment Levels as of February 20th Hourly Incentive Leave / LTD Total Members Working Core Working Supplemental Working Retirement Program Update 10 members have submitted ESPP or SRI retirement papers to Deere Direct as of February 23 rd. Only 15 members are eligible for the combination of these benefits in each contract year (Oct 1 Sep 30) for the life of the CBA. Spots are honored by date of retirement and then seniority. Stewards Training An 8 hr. Stewards Training class was held at the Union Hall on Feb. 14 th, As in the past, a proactive approach was taken to discuss key issues that are affecting members on the shop floor. Those key issues included: FMLA, Attendance Policy, OT Manual, Job Bids (Contractual vs. Non-Contractual), WI Benefits and Work Content to name a few. Contract Books Contract books were distributed to the shop floor on the 16 th and 17 th of February. Unfortunately not all members were able to obtain one as only 800 books were provided at this time. For those that were unable to obtain one and still wish to, I ask that you contact your steward so quantities can be identified. They will be distributed as soon as the next batch of books is obtained. on March 6th. The year will start on March 7 th (always the first Monday in March). Reward bonuses will take a few weeks to be paid out. The company will run a report identifying eligible recipients, the Shop Committee will attempt to review the report for errors, and then the reward will be paid. Supplemental Retention Award Letter Last month I covered the supplemental paid time off language. There now have been several questions about the $500 retention bonus award and qualifications. I have enclosed that language below: A retention award of $500 will be paid to all Supplemental employees currently on the payroll as of 1 October Additionally, Supplemental employees, who worked between 1 October 2009 and 1 October 2010 but are not on the payroll as of 1 October 2010 and Supplemental employees currently on the payroll will be paid a $500 retention bonus, provided they return to work each time when requested, work a minimum of five hundred (500) hours and satisfactorily complete the work period as identified by the Company. This retention award will be paid upon conclusion of the assigned work period. A maximum of two $500 retention awards will be paid to such employees during the life of this agreement. HSA Accounts Deere Direct / Fidelity As a reminder, call Deere Direct ( ) for establishing funds into your HSA, this includes lump sum and weekly contributions. Call Fidelity ( or 401k.com) for 401K contributions and HSA withdrawals or questions on your account. In Solidarity, Joseph E. Terlisner Shop Committee Chairman Attendance Policy The attendance year will come to an end
4 Financial Officers Hours For March 2011 Thurs. Mar. 03 9:00am to 9:30pm Fri. Mar :00pm to 4:00pm Fri. Mar :00am to 4:00pm Fri. Mar :00am to 4:00pm Fri. Mar :00am to 4:00pm I will also be in during the week other then Fridays. Those times vary from day to day. Union Dues 2011 What is the new formula for the union dues calculation? Everyone s dues are figured out separate using the time period from September 1 st of 2009 to August 31 st of 2010 the following year. Below is what s included in the formula: Straight time pay TCP reserves Ratification Bonus Profit sharing Vacation bonus Sub pay Christmas Bonus 1.25% Christmas Shutdown Call-in Pay Bereavement Pay Lump Sum Payment BAA payout All these buckets are all totaled together, then divided by the Total Qualified Straight Time Hours which gives you a sum and then multiplied by two and add either $12.00 or $15.00 to give your Union Dues Rate for the year Items that never are included = Shift premium, Team lead pay, overtime, and any SUB pay for time off by the Day or Week. This calculation takes place each year and your dues could go up or down depending upon the change in total dollars of each of the buckets and the total amount of hours worked in that year. The Grand Lodge Per Capita for 2011 will be $ The District per capita is $12.80 for The AFL-CIO per capita is $0.95 for 2010 and the South Central Labor per capita is $0.55 for This gives a total of $45.03 per caps we have to pay for We also put $0.25/member /month in the strike fund & $0.10/member/month into the emergency fund until we reach the maximum of $25, The minimum the dues for 2011 will be is $57.03 which is: the total per-capitas plus $ So every ones dues will be different by determining the amount that is calculated from the buckets above for each employee. I also have a master copy of all the dues calculations from the company and if any member has questions on how their dues were figured out you can stop in at my office and see them during my hours at the Union Hall. A reminder those supplementals hired in January 2011 need to get their reinstatement fees paid before the end of February. Those hired in February 2011 have till March 2011 to pay your initiation fees or reinstatement fees. There will be some surprises during the year for the union meetings drawings. I won t tell because it s a secret. SHHH!!! We are having sloppy joes for the meal after the March union meetings. See you there. A reminder that if you change address, phone number or get married and change your name, let me know because John Deere does not let me know. You can call ext. 23. David Berezinski/Secretary/Treasurer Bowling Tournament (Singles Tourney) March Bowling times are: Friday 10am, 4pm & 7pm Saturday 1pm, 4pm & 7pm $12.00 entry fee entry forms will be distributed by and hard copies will be available on the shop floor the first week in March.
