4 YOUR COMMUNITY GUIDE TO BUDGET 2016 All Canadians need and SUPPORT FOR SENIORS Ensuring seniors benefits keep pace with the cost of living. Restoring the eligibility age for Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement benefits to 65. Increased support for senior couples living apart. Enhancing services and financial support for veterans. AFFORDABLE HOUSING deserve housing that is safe, adequate and affordable. When affordable housing is in short supply, Canada s whole economy suffers. To give Canadians greater access to more affordable housing, Budget 2016 proposes to invest $2.3 billion over two years, starting in Of this amount, $2.2 billion reflects our Government s commitment to invest in social infrastructure. Investing in affordable housing will provide targeted support to those who need it most and create good jobs that help grow Canada s economy in a clean and sustainable way. In the coming year, our Government will work with provincial, Indigenous, and community partners to develop a National Housing Strategy. An additional $111.8 million has been allocated for the Homelessness Partnering Strategy. Increasing the Guaranteed Income Supplement for vulnerable single seniors. 4

5 CANADA CHILD BENEFIT HELPING 9 OUT OF 10 FAMILIES Too many middle-class families in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge are struggling to get ahead. We re working to build an economy that works for the middle class because we know that when middle class Canadians have money to save, invest, and grow the economy, all Canadians benefit. Families who need it most are receiving the new Canada Child Benefit (CCB). The Canada Child Benefit will provide a maximum annual benefit of up to $6,400 per child under the age of 6 and up to $5,400 per child aged 6 through 17. About 300,000 fewer children will be living in poverty in ! Simpler Tax-Free Better Targeted More Generous Visit budget.gc.ca for more BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Our Government is committed to building a sustainable future for Canada. At the United Nations Climate Conference (COP21) in Paris, alongside 194 other participating countries, Canada agreed to take steps to support the transition to a global low-carbon economy. Because we know the economy and the environment go hand in hand, Budget 2016 pledges $130 million over five years for clean technology development. In addition to supporting research and innovation, our Government is also committed to protecting National Parks and expanding environment education by committing $142.3 million over five years to Parks Canada Agency and Natural Resources Canada. I am proud of our Government s commitment to grow a sustainable economy that works for generations to come. - Dan Ruimy, MP dan.ruimy@parl.gc.ca

6 INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITIES We know that strong communities are at the core of the success of our nation! Our Government is investing over $600 million for 60 municipal projects across British Columbia. We are investing in wastewater, street and road improvements, water main replacements and road widening. These investments will have a huge impact on quality of life, improving key municipal services and boosting regional development for years to come. Modern, reliable infrastructure is the key to safe, productive communities -Dan Ruimy, MP 6 CANADA SUMMER JOBS Investing in our future means creating opportunities for young people in our communities. This year our Government doubled the funding for this program which provides funding for businesses and organizations to hire students in our communities. I have had the pleasure of getting to know some of the amazing young leaders in our community who are gaining valuable work experience. Check out my website to learn more about these exceptional young people! In Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge there are over 100 students and 38 businesses and organizations who received funding this summer! I had the pleasure of representing the Honourable Minister Navdeep Bains to announce that our Government is topping up the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program by $150 million. $500,000 from this program has already been granted to upgrade the Albion Sports Complex.

7 A RENEWED NATION TO NATION RELATIONSHIP Our Government is committed to a renewed relationship with Indigenous Peoples. Budget 2016 invests $2.6 billion in First Nations K-12 education and $1 billion to build First Nations schools. This is part of an approach to empowering indigenous communities and a nation to nation relationship with First Nation, Metis, & Inuit communities. On December 8, 2015, the Government of Canada announced the launch of a national inquiry to investigate the disproportionate number of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. STEPPING UP FOR YOUTH Young people aren't just the leaders of tomorrow, they're the leaders of today. - PM Justin Trudeau Our Government recognizes that the high cost of post-secondary education often limits young people from pursing their goals. Budget 2016 proposes to increase Canada Student Grant amounts by 50% for low and middle income students as well as increase the Canada Student Loan repayment threshold to ensure that no student will have to repay their Canada Student Loan until they are earning at least $25,000 per year.
