3 Expect the Unexpected With longer life expectancies and generally more active retirement living, it s important for you to have a strategy that can adapt to your changing needs, and that can withstand the test of time. Plan to face challenges in retirement that will add pressure to your savings. Here are a few to expect: Pensions and Social Security alone won t provide enough income. In the early 1980s, nearly half the working population had a corporate pension. During the 1990s, many companies began to switch over to defined contribution plans. Since then, the number of covered workers has steadily declined. 1 Relying on Social Security alone is also risky, as it will only provide a minimum level of retirement income. Plus, its future is also being called into question. For the first time in three decades, Social Security beneficiaries did not receive an automatic cost-of-living adjustment in Chances are you ll live a long life! The chance that at least one spouse of a healthy couple, aged 65, will reach age 95 is almost 50%. 3 Health care expenses can add up. The average couple retiring at age 65 will need $250,000 to pay the out-of-pocket costs of health care throughout their retirement. 4 Inflation will impact your spending power. Therefore, an annuity should only be purchased through these vehicles if you value the other features, and are willing to incur the annuity s annual fees for portfolio options, insurance, and other expenses, including any additional fees for optional protection benefits such as a guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefit (GMWB), which is explained in the enclosed brochure. Withdrawals come first from any contract gains, and can reduce the death benefits, optional benefits, and contract value. Taxable distributions are subject to ordinary income tax and, if made prior to age 59½, may also be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty. Certain qualified retirement plans require distributions to begin by age 70½. Consult your financial advisor, as well as the prospectus, for further details.
