2 UD s Definition of Academic Dishonesty Plagiarism n representing someone else s work as your own Fabrication n falsifying information, data, or research Cheating n copying someone else s work (HW, quizzes, exams) n obtaining answers to a graded activity in advance n copying or discussing a take home exam or assignment when told not to Academic Misconduct n other acts that disrupt the educational process and/or gives you an unfair advantage (rude behavior, bribery, extortion, etc.)

3 Why does someone cheat? I want a higher grade I don t have time to study Everyone else does it I thought I would not get caught I don t want to learn

4 Why is cheating harmful? 5 Plagiarism examples Suppose I give you the following assignment: In one paragraph, how does the Coca-Cola Company manage risk?

6 From Coca-Cola Annual Report: Our Company uses derivative financial instruments primarily to reduce our exposure to adverse fluctuations in interest rates and foreign currency exchange rates and, to a lesser extent, adverse fluctuations in commodity prices and other market risks. We do not enter into derivative financial instruments for trading purposes. As a matter of policy, all our derivative positions are used to reduce risk by hedging an underlying economic exposure.

Coca Cola 10K, 2009 Student then proceeds copy and provide a citation for nearly every paragraph in their essay! This is not technically plagiarism, but it subverts the expectation that the student writes their own essay.
