(2016) Course Description: This course emphasizes the use of accounting information throughout the planning, operation and control stages of managing an organization. It is designed to give students an understanding of decision-making in organizations, where the decisions involve the generation, analysis, or use of financial information. The major topics in this course include the use of accounting in making alternative choice decisions, the development and use of product cost information, and the use of accounting information for managerial planning and control. Students will also get an introduction to cost behavior, budgeting, responsibility accounting, cost control, and product costing. Learning Objectives: Estimate costs and benefits of alternative decisions o Focus on ABC as a procedure for estimating costs. Use variable and fixed costs to estimate costs and break-even points o Focus on how to treat fixed costs in the short and long run. Identify cost efficient processes o Focus on value chain analysis, target costing and quality costs. Choose appropriate performance measures o Focus on how to evaluate individuals.

2 Create a budget for planning and control purposes o Focus on how to put together a budget that contains both planning and control elements Course Hours: This course will meet for a total of 25 sessions. Each session is 120 minutes in length for a total course meeting time of 3000 minutes or 60 contact hours. Sichuan University awards 4 credits for the successful completion of this course. Attendance: Summer courses are very intensive and in order to be successful, students need to attend every class. Attendance is required for all lectures and in class activities. If you need to miss a day of class, make sure you speak with me first. Otherwise the absence will be unexcused. If you miss class due to illness, please bring a doctor s note, and the absence will be excused. Unexcused absences will negatively impact your grade, and Xi an Jiaotong University policy states that students with three or more unexcused absences will be referred to the Dean s office and face automatic failure of this course. Exams: No make-ups will be given after the exam. The use of the textbook or any other written reference is not allowed during the exams. Calculators are allowed. More information on the content will be given in class as the time for the exams approaches. Academic Dishonesty: All cases of academic dishonesty will be diligently pursued. Please see the student conduct code if you do not understand this issue. Academic dishonesty includes representing the work of another as one s own work or cheating by any means. Academic dishonesty also includes aiding, abetting, concealing or attempting such activity.
