1 Volume 2 # 9 From Ram s Desk QFundamental Mutual Fund NewsLetter March is generally a month of contradictions. Normally this month is a bearish month though this year just may be different. The whole post budget scenario is fairly positive though uncertain. Our thought is it would be a volatile month with the markets swinging both ways. The growth construct is as follows: Inflation still remains the big worry with Oil above 100US$ / bbl Interest rates are high and higher than this means negative growth pressures on corporates Food / agro / metals prices are still very high by average standards which also means higher inflation GDP still remains high at 8.5% though the general view is that GDP will moderate if inflation is high FII inflows are still muted and expected to remain so for the next quarter Political stability is now no more a worry for now GST is a huge positive & will add 1.5% to GDP in 2012 Improvement in the demand scenario is expected but it would be moderate if prices remain high Real estate prices have started stagnating and time would reveal if the prices will fall or still rise Infra sector got a huge boost in the budget and we believe the sector will move big time in 2012 Agriculture is doing well and rains will decide the coming months trend here The new foreigner being allowed to invest in Indian MF's is a good measure to reduce the funding gap and allow a new asset class of investors to invest Retail policy is expected in this year and that will be a necessity to reduce agro prices and inflation Finally the banks will learn to lower their NIM's and reduce the dependence on loans and increase efficiency of lending rather than mechanism of lending Indian equity markets are an antithesis to US markets and US markets have become overbought due to some good figures of employment and retail sales in homes but the overall gloom is still present and will come back to haunt after a few months. Funds which have moved from EM's to Developed markets will again move back and EM's after August will move big time and our target of will be reached. We advice our investors to book profits regularly at intervals to ensure that liquidity is never an issue. Cash is king is again going to be apparent once the bad news starts trickling in. In India 4-5 states are going to state elections and that is normally not a good thing for the Central govt. and definitely for the equity markets. Hence, Volatility is here to stay for the rest of the year. A good time play in large caps and quality stocks for a goal post strategy. We believe the sectors like Cement, Steel, commodities, Pharma and Infra will be gainers. IT, Textiles, logistics and Hotels may be losers.
