3 O N L I N E T R A V E L S A L E S A N D I N T E R M E D I A R I E S I N I N D O N E S I A P a s s p o r t 1 ONLINE TRAVEL SALES AND INTERMEDIARIES IN INDONESIA HEADLINES Online travel sales to residents registers current value growth of 12% to reach IDR93.2 trillion in 2018 Travel players shift their business models to accommodate the consumer trend changes and stay competitive as OTA sales to residents and airlines direct online sales to residents grow by 18% and 13% respectively in 2018 Online travel sales to residents to record a CAGR of 8% over the forecast period to reach IDR135.3 trillion in 2023 PROSPECTS Shift in Product Purchases From Offline To Online Seen in 2018 Growth in online travel sales to residents has been fuelled by a couple of factors: one is favourable demographics with a growing millennial population as well as a growing middleincome class and the other is the high digital adoption rate. With Indonesia s middle-income class expanding there is growing disposable income, which is, in turn, leading to greater demand for convenience, since the population has greater financial capabilities. The growing millennial population, on the other hand, means that more consumers will use digital methods to purchase products, which is in line with the nation s high digital adoption rate. All these factors account for the shift of population towards purchasing products online. To adjust to the growing needs of the population, and to stay competitive in the travel market, travel players have had to adopt online methods to better reach their target consumers, resulting in products increasingly being sold online compared to offline. Online Travel Agencies To Residents Contributes the Most Indonesia is experiencing a shift into the digital era with many e-commerce start-ups emerging. These include online travel agencies such as Traveloka, and Tiket.com, which within a few years have rapidly gained value share. In prior years, direct online sales such as airline direct online sales dominated online sales to residents; however, they have been overtaken by the OTAs as the top contributor to the category with its fast growth. This is partially because the OTAs have a wide product selection, enabling consumers to compare first before purchasing. In addition, these OTAs are usually start-ups, which, due to their excellent performance, have received a lot of investment from angel investors. These OTAs may use their budgets to promote branding by using strategies such as subsidising ticket prices through sales promotions, etc. Over the forecast period sales through OTAs are expected to increase rapidly, contributing the highest value share of online sales to residents. Online To Residents To Register Healthy Growth Over the Forecast Period To remain competitive in the travel market, conventional players such as Dwidaya Tour & Travel, Panorama Sentrawisata and Smailing Tour & Travel have their online platforms ready to

Airlines and other transport players have also sought to create their own direct websites to adapt to the changes and offer substitution methods for consumers. With domestic traveling becoming a potentially strong category due to the government s aggressive promotion of domestic destinations, increased value growth of online travel sales to residents is to be expected in the future years.
