TEL: , , & FAX: (9221) : URL: E.MAIL: Report on National Stamp Exhibition Venue: Karachi Expo Centre Stadium Road, Opp. Hassan Square, Karachi, Pakistan June 28-30, Stamp Society of Pakistan [SSOP] The Stamp Society of Pakistan, in collaboration with the DAWN Media Group and Pakistan Post, and under the patronage of the Philatelic Federation of Pakistan, organized a well represented National Stamp Exhibition, titled KURRACHEE 2013 at the Expo Centre, Karachi. This exhibition, held from June 28th 30th, 2013, was the largest ever stamp exhibition in the history of Pakistan, with over 140 frames being displayed and even judged on table. It was viewed by a large number of philatelists from all over Pakistan and attracted crowds of all ages on each day. The media (both electronic and print) reported the event prominently [ Stamps collectors and philatelists were highly impressed by the over 100 page Souvenir issued in connection with the Exhibition. The Souvenir carried an embossed reproduction of a stamp of Allama Iqbal on the title cover, another first for the Stamp Society of Pakistan. The exhibition displayed 35 entries from all over Pakistan. These were judged on competitive basis in different classes:- 1) Traditional, 2) Postal History, 3) Aero-Philately, 4) Thematic, 5) Revenue and 6) Literature Class. The entries were judged by a Jury comprising Dr. U.A.G. Issani as Chairman, and Mr. Akhtar Ul Islam Siddiqui and Mr. Rizwan Kodvawala as its members. The design of the medal, alongwith a specimen of the Certificate is placed at Annexure A to this report. This was the 8th International standard National Stamp Exhibition under FIAP rules at Expo Centre, dedicated to Pakistan Postal History. This exhibition had World Class arrangements and the large picturesque setting, wall skins, seating sofas for study and deliberations, Children Live Art Competition and video presentations by Pakistan Post Foundation (Press Division) and Stamp Society of Pakistan. The Commissioner General of the exhibition was Engr. Afzal H. Nanjee. The executive Committee members of the SSOP were also present during the exhibition to answer queries from the general public visiting the Exhibition. Also present were Mr. Iqbal Nanjee, President of the SSOP; Mr. Imtiaz Hussain Subzwari, Acting President PFP and Mr. Abdul Wahid General Secretary PFP. 3

4 Senior Officials of Pakistan Post graced the exhibition on all the three days. Mr. Syed Ghulam Panjatan Rizvi, DG Pakistan Post inaugurated the exhibition and he, alongwith Mr. Shakoor, Dy. DG Pakistan Post, Mr. Ghulam Mustafa Zardari, PMG, Mr. Azmat Ali Shah, Senior PMG, Mr. Manzoor Ahmad, Chief Controller of Stamps, Mr. Tahir Ayub, Chief PMG G.P.O, Mr. Jalil Siddiqui, Divisional Supdt. Distt. Central and Mr. Pervez Ursani, GM Postal Life Insurance visited the exhibition and attended the Palmaris Dinner at the Karachi Gymkhana Club, Karachi. The Stamp Drawing Competition, an annual feature since 2008 of the SSOP that is organized to promote philately amongst the younger generation, was held for the fifth year. As usual, the participating children were divided into two groups, the first age group being 4-10 years and the second, 11 to 17 years. The competition for the first age group was held on the first day of the Exhibition, while the competition for the second age group was organized on the second day. For the first time, there were participants from Hyderabad, Dadu and Mirpurkhas, although online forms were received from the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa as well. The drawings made by the children were judged by Mr. Adil Salahuddin, ex-head of Stamp Production ( and still the Chief Designer), Pakistan Security Printing Corporation, who has been awarded the Pride of Performance and several other special awards. The following were the declared winners of the two age groups:- Group A (4-10 years) 1st Prize: Ali Muhammad Nizar Premji 2nd Prize: Leena Shahab 3rd Prize: Araj Naveed Special Prize: Maryam Abdul Rahim Group B (11-17 years) 1st Prize: Anique Azam 2nd Prize: Vania Rizvi 3rd Prize: Khadija Siddiqui Special Prize: Marium Bano The winners were awarded certificates, medal and souvenir by the SSOP and special prizes were given by the Director General Pakistan Post on June 30, The annual children stamp drawing competition is unique in the annals of Philatelic exhibition the world over. Pakistan is the only country where it is held every year and SSOP is the only philatelic society today in the world that organizes such competitions. Stamps drawn by the winners of the previous two exhibitions ( ) have already been issued by the Pakistan Post as postage stamps. Unfortunately, drawing of the winners of 2012 have not appeared on the postage stamps this year but the DG Pakistan Post has promised to keep the same under consideration and issue the sheet of eight stamps soon. The Pakistan Post issued three special cancellations, one for the each day of the exhibition. A dedicated Philatelic Counter of the Pakistan Post was established at the exhibition for issuance of the Special cancellation and sale of Philatelic material, which resulted in huge sales on all the three days. The SSOP published a 120 page souvenir on the occasion of Kurrachee This again was a milestone as no such souvenir is seen at the Philatelic Exhibitions around the world. This souvenir contains information and detailed articles with in-depth study on Pakistan Postal History covering the period from These articles include extensive research on printing by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Ltd., London and Pakistan Security Printing Corporation Ltd., Karachi. Such classical articles make this souvenir nothing less than a reference book. We thank the Pakistan Post for their unconditional support extended in the organizing and holding of the exhibition. The Pakistan Post advertisement was published on the outer back cover of the Souvenir. 4

5 Stamp Dealer & Publication Stalls had two full fledged stalls at the Exhibition Hall where a large number of philatelic material, coins, banknotes and publications were available for sale to enthusiasts. SSOP hosted Palmaris Dinner for the Exhibitors on Saturday, 29th June, 2013, Karachi Gymkhana Club, 04- Club Road, Karachi, after the Philatelic Federation Managing Committee meeting where important issues were raised and detailed discussion were held in the interest of philately, which was largely attended alongwith the senior officials of Pakistan Post and the Jury Members. Auction on Sunday, 30th June, 2013, for the first time in the history a successful attempt of live auction was also organised at Mezzanine floor of the same hall at Expo centre by the Crescent Auction which was largely attended by the Philatelists all over Pakistan. The senior management of the Dawn Media Group, Ali Hassan Naqvi, Ghazzanfar Ali Manghi including team Zakir Tajammul and Kamran Farooq, and the Director General, Pakistan Post, Syed Ghulam Panjatan Rizvi and his senior officials deserves our appreciation and deepest heartfelt thanks.
