Helping employees with emotional, practical and medical support. Second Medical Opinion The Second Medical Opinion service provides access to over 53,000 leading consultants worldwide. They offer second opinions on diagnoses and treatments for almost any condition. Treatment Sourcing The Treatment Sourcing service makes it easier for employees and their families to access convenient private healthcare at competitive prices 1. 1 The cost of any treatment will be met by the service user. Medical Care Direct may charge an administration fee when treatment is sourced. Personal Nurse Service The Personal Nurse Service provides longterm practical and emotional support over the phone with the same qualified nurse for employees who make a Critical Illness claim. BusinessCare (for employers) now available via CLASS BusinessCare gives employers the tools they need to comply with employment law, follow best HR practice and trade safely to protect their businesses. 2

4 Case Study MELANIE S STORY The diagnosis When three year old Melanie was diagnosed with leukaemia, her parents felt that their world was falling apart. Still at such a young age, they were devastated at the thought of their daughter not getting a chance to live a full life. The NHS was doing an excellent job with the treatment they were providing Melanie, and it was clear she was responding well. However, their Personal Nurse Adviser could see this incredibly traumatic event was taking its toll on Melanie s parents. Taking positives steps Following several calls between the Personal Nurse Adviser and Melanie s parents, it was agreed that some specialist counselling would help them through this emotionally difficult time. Along with the specialist counselling sessions, Melanie s parents received long-term help from their Personal Nurse Adviser whenever they needed someone to talk to about their worries. Having someone by their side at each step, and feeling that they were not left alone during this distressing experience helped them focus on the positives and not become too overwhelmed by the situation. Adding real value to our clients with a unique practical and caring service.
5 JARGON BUSTER WE KNOW THAT NOT EVERYONE DEALS WITH GROUP INSURANCE ON A DAILY BASIS, SO HERE S A SHORT LIST OF THE MOST COMMON TERMS USED AND WHAT THEY MEAN. Medical Underwriting Medical underwriting is a process where we assess the health and lifestyle of a member to check if we can provide cover. This will usually begin with a member completing a heath declaration form. Discretionary Entrant A discretionary entrant is an employee who joins outside of the policy s eligibility conditions or normal joining times. For example, an employee is over the policy s cease age but requires cover. This type of cover is always provided at Canada Life s discretion and is normally subject to further requirements, such as medical underwriting. Free Cover Level The total amount of benefit we will cover on standard terms without the need for medical underwriting. The free cover level applies to normal entrants only (i.e. those joining in line with agreed eligibility and joining conditions) and not discretionary entrants. The free cover level will be shown on your quote. Survival Period A period of time, typically 14 days, in which a member must survive following the diagnosis of an insured illness or operation to be eligible to claim. Cease Age The age that cover will cease for an insured person. Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusion (PECE) This refers to any illness a member has either suffered from, or currently has prior to joining a Group Critical Illness scheme. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS WE RECEIVE REGARDING OUR GROUP CRITICAL ILLNESS POLICIES. What is Total Permanent Disability cover? This is an additional option we offer that covers members for total permanent and irreversible disability arising from injury or disease. The disability must reasonably be expected to last throughout life and cannot be improved upon by medical treatment and/or surgical procedures used by the NHS at the time of the claim. What level of cover do children get? A policy member s child, including legally adopted children, will be covered for 25% of the member s benefit (subject to a maximum of 20,000). How will the benefit be paid? The payment will be made directly to the claimant. 5
