1 36 Million Without Health Insurance in 2014; Decreases in Uninsurance Between 2013 and 2014 Varied by State An estimated 36 million people in the United States had no health insurance in 2014, approximately 11.5% of the population, according to new data from CDC s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to be released Tuesday. The data are included in a new report, Health Insurance Coverage: Early Release of Estimates From the National Health Interview Survey, 2014, which presents the latest full-year insurance estimates for the United States. Estimates for 2014 were based on household interviews about 111,682 people. Of the million people who were covered by private health insurance in 2014, 2.2% were covered by plans purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace or state-based exchanges. The report also contains new estimates of health insurance coverage for all 50 states and the District of Columbia: Uninsured at the time of interview for persons under age 65, by state: United States, 2014 WA OR NV CA HI AK ID UT AZ MT WY CO NM ND VT ME MN NH SD WI NY CT RI MA MI NE IA PA IL IN OH NJ DE KS WV MO VA DC KY MD OK TN NC AR SC TX LA MS AL GA < 7.0% 7.0% 9.9% FL 10.0% 12.9% 13.0% 15.9% 16.0% and over NOTE; Data are based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. DATA SOURCE: CDC/NCHS, National Health Interview Survey, 2014, Family Core component. Hawaii had the lowest percentage of uninsured individuals under age 65 in 2014 (2.5%), followed by Massachusetts (3.2%), Delaware (5.4%), and Iowa (6.4%). The District of Columbia has a similarly low uninsurance rate (3.3%). The states with the highest uninsurance rates for persons under age 65 in 2014 were Texas (21.5%), Oklahoma (21.5%), Alaska (21.2%), and Florida (18.8%). 4 Health Insurance Coverage: Early Release of Estimates From the National Health Interview Survey, 2014 NOTES: A person was defined as uninsured if he or she did not have any private health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, Children s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), state sponsored or other government sponsored health plan, or military plan. A person was also defined as uninsured if he or she had only Indian Health Service coverage or had only a private plan that paid for one type of service, such as accidents or dental care. These health insurance estimates are being released prior to final data editing and final weighting to provide access to the most recent information from the National Health Interview Survey. The resulting estimates for persons without health insurance are generally percentage points lower than those based on the editing procedures used for the final data files. Occasionally, due to decisions made for the final data editing and weighting, estimates based on preliminary editing procedures may differ by more than 0.3 percentage points from estimates based on final files. Data are based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. DATA SOURCE: CDC/NCHS, National Health Interview Survey, , Family Core component. 12 Health Insurance Coverage: Early Release of Estimates From the National Health Interview Survey, 2014 NOTES: Public coverage includes Medicaid, Children s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), state-sponsored or other government-sponsored health plan, Medicare, and military plans. A small number of persons were covered by both public and private plans and were included in both categories.
