2 Be Red Cross Ready 2 HURRICANE SAFETY CHECKLIST Hurricanes are strong storms that cause life - and property-threatening hazards Z\JOHZÅVVKPUNZ[VYTZ\YNLOPNO winds and tornados. Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane. WHAT SHOULD I DO? KNOW THE DIFFERENCE Hurricane Watch Hurricane conditions are a threat within 48 hours. Review your hurricane plans, keep informed and be ready to act if a warning is issued. Hurricane Warning Hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours. Complete your storm preparations and leave the area if directed to do so by authorities. WHAT SUPPLIES DO I NEED? WHAT DO I DO AFTER A HURRICANE? RListen to a NOAA Weather Radio for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). RCheck your disaster supplies and replace or restock as needed. RBring in anything that can be picked up by the wind (bicycles, lawn furniture, etc.). RClose windows, doors and hurricane shutters. If you do not have hurricane shutters, close and board up all windows and doors with plywood. RTurn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible so that food will last longer if the power goes out. RTurn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances. RFill your car s gas tank. RTalk with members of your household and create an evacuation plan. Planning and practicing your evacuation plan minimizes confusion and fear during the event. RLearn about your community s hurricane response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for your pets to be cared for. REvacuate if advised by authorities. Be careful to avoid Àooded roads and washed out bridges. RBecause standard homeowners insurance doesn t cover Àooding, it s important to have protection from the Àoods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the 8.S. For more information on Àood insurance, please visit the National Flood Insurance Program Web site at RWater - at least a 3 day supply; one gallon per person per day RFood - at least a 3 day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepared food RFlashlight RBattery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible) RExtra batteries RFirst aid kit RMedication (7-day supply) and medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane) RMulti-purpose tool RSanitation and personal hygiene items RCopies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deedlease to home, passports, birth certi cates, insurance policies) RCell phone with chargers RFamily and emergency contact information RExtra cash REmergency blanket RMap(s) of the area RBaby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers) RPet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowl) RTools/supplies for securing your home RExtra set of car keys and house keys RExtra clothing, hat and sturdy shoes RRain gear RInsect repellent and sunscreen RCamera for photos of damage For more information on disaster and emergency preparedness, visit RedCross.org. Copyright By the American National Red Cross I Stock No RContinue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or the local news for the latest updates. RStay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent Àooding even after the hurricane or tropical storm has ended. RIf you evacuated, return home only when of cials say is safe. RDrive only if necessary and avoid Àooded roads and washed-out bridges. RKeep away from loose or dangling power lines and report then immediately to the power company. RStay out of any building that has water around it. RInspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes. R8se Àashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles. RAvoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it s not contaminated. RCheck refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out. RWear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury. RWatch animals closely and keep them under your direct control. RUse the telephone only for emergency calls. Let your Family Know You re Safe If your community has experienced a hurricane, or any disaster, register on the American Red Cross and Well Web site available through RedCross. org/safeandwell to let your family and friends know about your welfare. If you don t have Internet access, call GET-INFO to register yourself and your family.

4 Emergency Contact Information 4 ARE YOU PREPARED TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR FAMILY? Family Communications: Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so plan how you will contact one another. Think about how you will communicate in different situations. Create a contact card for each family member. Escape Routes: Determine primary and alternate routes to take to get out of your house. Where to Meet: Establish a place to meet family members in the event of an emergency and you are separated. Include in your plans a location that is near your home (e.g., a neighbor s house or yard) and outside the immediate area (e.g., the parking lot of a speci c grocery store). Medicines and medical records: Keep an extra supply of medicines your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container. First Aid Kit: Talk to your veterinarian about what is most appropriate for your pet s emergency medical needs. Most kits should include cotton bandages rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic VPU[TLU["ÅLHHUK[PJRWYL]LU[PVU"SH[L_NSV]LZPZVWYVW`SHSJVOVSHUKZHSPULZVS\[PVU0UJS\KLHWL[ÄYZ[ aid reference book. *VSSHY^P[O0+[HNOHYULZZVYSLHZO!@V\YWL[ZOV\SK^LHYHJVSSHY^P[OP[ZYHIPLZ[HNHUKPKLU[PÄJH[PVU at all times. Include a backup leash, collar and ID tag in your pet s emergency supply kit. Important documents: Place copies of your pet s registration information, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clean plastic bag or waterproof container and also add them in your kit. Crate or other pet carrier: If you need to evacuate in an emergency situation take your pets and animals with you, provided that it is practical to do so. Sanitation: Include pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach to provide for your pet s sanitation needs. You can use bleach as a disinfectant (dilute nine parts water to one part bleach), or in an emergency you can also use it to purify water. Use 8 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water, stir it well and let is stand for 30 minutes before use. Do not use scented or color safe bleaches or those with added cleaners. A picture of you and your pet together: If you become separated from your pet during an emergency, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you in identifying your pet. Include detailed information about species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics. Familiar items: Put favorite toys, treats or bedding in your kit. Familiar items can help reduce stress for your pet. Consider two kits. In one, put everything your pets will need to stay where you are and make it on your own. The other should be a lightweight, small version you can take with you if you and your pets have to get away. 2. Make a Plan for what you will do in an emergency. Plan in advance what you will do in an emergency. Be prepared to assess the situation. Use common sense and whatever you have on hand to take care of yourself and ensure your pet s during an emergency. -VYTVYLPUMVYTH[PVU]PZP[YLHK`NV]VYJHSS),9,(+@^^^WL[Z^LSJVTLJVT

7 7 ASSISTANCE SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTERS The Florida Division of Emergency Management, in coordination with each local emergency management agency in the state, developed a registry to allow residents with special needs to register with their local emergency management agency to receive assistance during a KPZHZ[LY;OLZ[H[L^PKLYLNPZ[Y`WYV]PKLZÄYZ[YLZWVUKLYZ^P[O]HS\HISLPUMVYTH[PVU[VWYLWHYL for disaster or other emergencies. Bring at least three days of medical supplies you will need including: special food, water, prescriptions, nebulizers, syringes, sterile swabs and oxygen equipment. Important: Special needs shelters do not provide hands-on medical care so you may want to bring a caregiver with you. Be sure if you require respirators or other electric-dependent medical equipment, you should make prior medical arrangements with your physician. You should also register with your power company. TRANSPORTATION If you do not have transportation or are unable to drive, assistance may be available. Check ^P[O`V\YJV\U[`»Z6MÄJLVM,TLYNLUJ`4HUHNLTLU[[VÄUKKL[HPSLKPUMVYTH[PVUHIV\[YV\[LZ to assist you in event of evacuation. :V\YJL!O[[W!^^^ÅVYPKHKPZHZ[LYVYNKPZHIPSP[`ZWLJPHSULLKZ The Department of Financial Services urges all Floridians to review their insurance policies and conduct an annual check-up by asking themselves the following questions: Can you access all of your insurance policies right now? It is recommended that you keep your insurance policies, along with other important documents in a waterproof container with one copy kept in another location, preferably a safety deposit box. Do you know what your homeowner s insurance policy covers? Many policyholders have a tendency to sign the policy every year without adjusting the coverage to the current property value. The majority of Floridians do not have the money set aside to cover their out-of-pocket expenses in the event of a hurricane, including their deductible. Do you know what your homeowner s association or condo covers? Before a disaster occurs, check with your homeowner s association or with your condo to make sure that you understand which repair expenses are covered by your association or condo and which will be your responsibility. Here is a brief review of key items every homeowner should check for in his or her insurance policy: Hurricane Deductible This deductible is based on the value of the insured property, not the estimate of damage, and applies to only hurricane claims (those resulting from a hurricane declared by the National Weather Service). This is the amount the homeowner is responsible for out of the total damages to the home. It is usually stated as a percentage of the policy limits. Flood Insurance Typically, homeowners policies exclude Àood damage. Homeowners without Àood insurance may qualify through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Actual Cash Value The depreciated value of property damaged in a storm. Replacement Cost The amount needed to replace or repair your damaged property with materials of similar kind and quality, without deducting for depreciation. Ordinance or Law Coverage If a local building ordinance or law increases the cost of repairing or replacing an insured dwelling, the insurance company will not pay the additional amount, unless this coverage is added to the policy. A homeowner s agent MUST offer this coverage and some companies automatically include this in their coverage. Additional Living Expenses Homeowner s packages provide additional living expense coverage that will pay some extra expenses if damage to your home requires you to live somewhere else while it is being repaired. Policies may designate a limit of coverage for additional living expenses, but does not obligate the insurance company to pay this amount in advance or in full. The policyholder must keep receipts for expenses and submit them to the insurance company for reimbursement.
