What did you say?? What language are you speaking?????
Did you know you speak acronymia? Commonly used Social Security acronyms: ALJ: Administrative Law Judge AUX: Auxiliary Beneficiary BIC: Beneficiary Identification Code BIF: Beneficiaries In Force BOAN: Beneficiary s Own Account Number BRI: Benefit Rate Increase
More CAN: Claim Account Number CDR: Continuing Disability Review CFR: Code of Federal Regulations CFR: Case File Review CMA: Current Month Accrual COGS: Court Ordered Garnishment System COLA: Cost-of-Living Adjustment CPL: Couple DAC: Disabled Adult Child DCF: Disability Control File
And More DEC: Decision DL: Driver s License DOD: Date of Death DOD: Disability Onset Date DOD: District Office Designator DOO: Date of Onset EIN: Employer Identification Number FAM: Federal Amount FBR: Federal Benefit Rate GPO: Government Pension Offset HI: Health Insurance
And More. IAR: Interim Assistance Reimbursement LAF: Ledger Account File MBA: Monthly Benefit Amount MBR: Master Beneficiary Record OP: Overpayment PA: Public Assistance PIA: Primary Insurance Amount RIB: Retirement Insurance Amount SMI: Supplementary Medical Insurance SSI: Supplement Security Income TRO: Treasury recovery offset
More UAT: Update After Transfer VA: Veterans Administration W/E: Wage Earner YOC: Year of Coverage Title 2: Social Security Benefits (Insurance) Title 16: Supplement Security Income (needs based, similar to welfare)
SSA vs SSI SSI is an exempt entitlement program; a type of needs based benefit. SSA (SSDI, SSRI and SSA dependent benefits paid to an adult child) are collectible insurance benefits.
Is My Guy Getting SSI or SSA? Utilize your state resources: FPLS SDX Bendex SSI related medical Client declaration/documentation
Create and Utilize Working Partnerships! What Social Security office serves your immediate area? Is someone in your office designated as a point of contact for Social Security matters? Is someone in the local Social Security office designated as a point of contact for child support matters?
Use the Social Security Website Useful information, user friendly; Benefit verification letters can be obtained via the Internet request by our mutual customers; Friendly search features; Office locator service via zip code.
Partnerships If you are having a problem contacting a local office, attempt to work up and over. Cultivate partnerships within disclosure rules. Familiarize yourself with acronyms.
Collecting from Social Security Send all notices to your local Social Security Office First payment will normally be received within 60 days of the date OWI is mailed
SSA Process SSA will accept the garnishment order because it is a legal obligation; Enforceable under appropriate State or local law. Legal process must be served (i.e., delivered in a manner prescribed by law) on the party named in the process. Processing is now the primary responsibility of the Field Offices.
COGS Process SSA will identify the Beneficiary from the Garnishment Order; Determine payment status using the MBR. If there is no MBR present for the beneficiary and there is no claim or appeal pending, the FO will return the order. If there is an MBR in any LAF status or if a claim or appeal is pending, process it as if the person is receiving benefits; COGS (Court Ordered Garnishment System) will track the garnishment when case goes to payment status (unless a large underpayment is involved).
Social Security Website As promised, here is a sample of the Social Security website. This is user friendly, easy to find your way around. Take time to play with the site.

Order a benefit verification:

Problems????? Notice not acknowledged. Payments not being sent. Withhold amount did not change Use office procedure to contact the local Social Security office Payments stopped. Incarceration, periodic review failure, loss of contact, death Systemic error stopped mailing of withheld funds.
Letters from Social Security Initial implementation. Usually confirm implementation up to the amount of the request or the legal limitation Supplemental notifications. May result from an action by the payment center and may not reflect a change to the withholding.
