21 Critical Illness Plans With the advancement in medical technology and treatment, people are living longer and once deadly diseases are being controlled and cured. One way your employees can shield themselves and their dependents from the economic consequences of critical illness is to purchase a critical illness policy, which pays a lump sum benefit (paid directly to the employee, or a beneficiary) when they are diagnosed with critical conditions such as heart attack, stroke, organ transplant, Alzheimer s disease and end stage renal failure. There is no direct employer cost.
