3 KPU TEMPORARY MEDICAL INSURANCE & BC MSP YES Do you already have BC MSP? NO KPU TEMPORARY MEDICAL INSURANCE Guard Me is a temporary basic health insurance plan providing international students coverage while waiting for BC Medical Services Plan (MSP). Once students have submitted an application for BC MSP, the waiting period to get enrolled into MSP is approximately 2-3 months. All international students are automatically enrolled in the temporary health insurance when they register for their first course. You will not get any card for your temporary insurance, instead you will be issued a policy number via to your KPU account near the 6th week of the semester. You can cancel your Temporary Medical Insurance The deadlines to opt out of the Temporary Medical Insurance are: Spring Jan. 31 Summer May 31 Fall Sept. 30 To opt out of your temporary medical insurance, please visit click on Current Students, then on Opt Out You cannot cancel your Temporary Medical Insurance Apply online: my.gov.bc.ca/msp/ application/prepare While you wait for your BC MSP card, you can still receive medical help with your KPU Temporary Medical Insurance provided through Guard Me Once you have received your MSP card and letter, you can use the BC MSP letter to opt out of your temporary health insurance by visiting and clicking on Current Students and then Opt-out. For opt-out deadlines and other insurance-related information, visit If you visit a direct billing clinic, you will not be required to pay. To find a direct billing clinic, visit and click on Find a Clinic. If you visit any other clinic or are required to have any medical tests done, you will have to pay first, keep your receipts and submit a claim to Guard Me to have the money reimbursed to you. Please contact Guard Me if you are unsure of the policy coverage at or info@guard.me. Claims less than $2,500 can be submitted online. 4 KSA S EXTENDED HEALTH & DENTAL PLAN The cost of many health-care services, such as prescription drugs, vision care and dental care, are not covered by BC MSP or Guard Me. Therefore, in addition to your BC MSP, it is mandatory for KPU students to enroll in the KSA Extended Health and Dental plan. Students who meet the eligibility criteria listed below will be enrolled automatically once they have registered for classes. 1) are a member of the Kwantlen Student Association, 2) are in an applicable program, 3) you meet the eligibility criteria of one* or more credits, 4) are residing in Canada, and 5) are under the age of 70. Students can only opt-out if they have comparable coverage, meaning a plan that offers similar benefits. Please note, MSP is not sufficient to opt-out from your extended health & dental plan. You can opt-out through KPU s Online Self Service (OSS) portal and you must opt-out within the first 30 days of the semester that you are charged. When you go to the dentist or pharmacist, present your Benefits Card. To get your Benefits Card, please visit and click on mybenefits Card. The cost will be deducted from the card. For anything else, you will need to pay in full and then claim the cost afterwards. BRITISH COLUMBIA MEDICAL SERVICES PLAN (BC MSP) The BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) is the provincial government s program that provides basic medical benefits. Everyone living in British Columbia for 6 months or longer MUST enroll in MSP (except students with existing coverage from another Canadian province or territory). If you live in British Columbia for 6 months or longer, you must apply for MSP immediately upon your arrival as there is, approximately, a 2-3 months waiting period before MSP coverage starts. Please visit the following link to apply for BC MSP, MSP is mandatory for anyone residing in BC for 6 months or longer. Simply present your MSP card when visiting a doctor. Please note, MSP does not cover the cost of prescription drugs. To get more information on what MSP covers please visit bc.ca/gov/content/health $37.50 per month KSA Extended health insurance provides coverage for prescription medicine, dental care, vision care, and travel insurance.
