Although alcohol may be legal at a younger age abroad, its use and abuse is often connected to students being victims of crime, violence, accident, and injury. The following are minimum standards to be followed by students and program leaders who travel off-campus: Underage drinking and illicit drug use are illegal and will not be tolerated. Anyone who provides alcohol to an underage person or is found in possession of illegal drugs will be subject to disciplinary action either before or after return to campus. Drug use abroad can result in severe legal and judicial consequences abroad, including arrest and imprisonment in that country. No alcohol use in vans, buses, or any other means of transporting students as part of their off-campus program. Students of legal drinking age in the country of destination are expected to use responsible judgment at all times if they choose to consume alcohol. Those consuming alcohol must adhere to all applicable laws, and are expected to exercise moderation in their consumption. Excessive alcohol consumption that interferes with course or activity management or the participation of any student, or endangers group members is grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. When a group spends the night in a hotel or other lodging, it is incumbent upon each member to behave responsibly as representatives of the University. No abusive, illegal, or irresponsible use of alcohol or drugs will be tolerated. Hotel management will be encouraged to deal with disruptive or illegal activities just as they would with other hotel guests. Participation in course-related or cultural activities while intoxicated, or while suffering the effects of over-consumption of alcohol (hangovers, vomiting, etc.), will not be tolerated. This includes attending classes or any other program functions while intoxicated, or missing any of those meetings as a result of the over-consumption of alcohol. Procedures Followed for Alcohol or Drug Violations Violations of Saint Peter s University s policy regarding alcohol or illegal drugs, or of the policy established by the program leader of the off-campus course, will be addressed in one or more of the following ways: Restricted or supervised involvement in subsequent activities during the travel period. Dismissal from the program (the violator will travel home at his/her expense). Underage or illegal use of alcohol or other drugs are grounds for such Page 4 of 7 Amazon Rainforest Travel Course Application
5 dismissal. Financial restitution for damaged property. University judicial proceedings upon return to campus. Student Traveler Agreement By submitting my application below: I understand that it is my responsibility alone to obtain a valid passport and visa, if necessary, for travel from and to the United States. I also understand that I am responsible for obtaining all necessary immunizations for travel and study abroad. I understand that only those students who are in good academic standing may apply for study abroad opportunities and that no student may participate in any study abroad program unless all Saint Peter s University health and financial holds have been cleared. I agree to respect the laws and customs of the host country, the Saint Peter s University Student Handbook, the alcohol and drug policy detailed above, and all other reasonable standards of conduct promulgated by Saint Peter s University, its agents and consortium partners. I agree to participate fully in the academic program, attending every group outing and activity. I acknowledge that if the faculty leader, with the concurrence of the Director of the Center for Global Learning, determine that my conduct (leading up to the trip and while abroad) is detrimental to the best interests of the program or of Saint Peter s University, my participation in the program may be terminated and I will not be allowed to travel with the group, or will be sent home early, at my own expense. I understand that, if this occurs, my parents may be contacted and no refund will be available to me. Center for Global Learning Statement of Responsibility (International) By checking 'I agree' below, I confirm that I have read and understand the following provisions and agree to be bound thereby: I understand that there are risks inherent in travel and study in international settings, that the political, environmental and cultural situations abroad may differ from those in my own country and university, that I may be exposed to different health and safety risks while abroad; have weighed the risk inherent in foreign study with my desire to further my educational experience, have concluded that the risks can be assumed, and in so doing have decided to participate in the program abroad. I understand that on rare occasions an emergency may develop which necessitates the administration of medical care, hospitalization, or surgery. Therefore, in the event of injury or illness, I hereby authorize representatives or agents in charge of said program, to secure any necessary treatment including the administration of an anesthetic and surgery. It is understood that such treatment shall be solely at my expense and I agree to reimburse Saint Peter's University for any expenses which it might suffer on account of said injury or treatment thereof. I hereby release and promise not to sue Saint Peter's University, its Board of Trustees, its Study Abroad Program, its agents, affiliates, officers, and employees for any loss or damage of property or any bodily injury, illness or death caused by, derived from or associated with my participation in the program (except for such injury or damages as may be caused by the gross negligence or willful misconduct of the employees or agents of Saint Peter's University). I understand that as an American citizen in a foreign country, I will be subject to the laws of that country. While I am enrolled in a travel course I agree to conduct myself in a manner that will comply with the regulations of the program administration and the rules and regulations of Saint Peter's University as stipulated in the Saint Peter's University Student Handbook. I understand that Saint Peter's University has the authority to discontinue my participation in the program if, in the judgment of the University, my conduct is unacceptable. I will attend to any legal problems I encounter with any foreign nationals or governments. Saint Peter's University is not responsible for providing any assistance under such circumstances. I understand that I am solely responsible for any and all costs arising out of my voluntary or involuntary withdrawal from the program prior to its completion, including withdrawal caused by illness or disciplinary action by representative(s) of Saint Peter's University or my host institution. I understand that should a program cancellation become necessary for safety reasons, an emergency, an act of God or for reasons beyond Saint Peter s control prior to student departure, every effort will be made to refund recoverable costs to participants. The time of program cancellation will determine the actual recoverable costs. The closer the program is to the start date, the less recoverable costs will be available. * I certify that I have health and hospitalization insurance which is applicable overseas and is sufficient to cover special needs of study abroad students (provided as part of travel program). I understand that non-tuition program charges are subject to change depending upon international currency rate fluctuations. *Because full refunds are often not possible, students may wish to consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance that can be obtained through many travel agents or insurance companies. Policies vary on what triggers trip cancellation, so students should check with Director of Center for Global Learning for more details. Terms & Conditions [Required] I agree with the terms & conditions listed above as well as those related to the refund policy on the Financial Agreement Form. [ ] I Agree Guest Policies: Conditions of Participation & Waiver of Liability Form for Guests Accompanying Saint Peter s University Study Abroad Programs This form should be completed by the guests of a program director, site director or instructor when that guest is accompanying a study abroad program but not participating for academic credit. In addition the form should be completed by the parent of any minor child who is accompanying the faculty/staff director or instructor. CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION Page 5 of 7 Amazon Rainforest Travel Course Application
6 Please review the following statement that constitutes conditions for accompanying a Saint Peter s University study abroad program. I understand that Saint Peter s University (hereafter SAINT PETER S) faculty or staff member leading or teaching in a study abroad program must fulfill her/his obligations to the program and its students and that these often extend throughout the day, evening and weekends. I further understand that SAINT PETER S faculty/staff members leading or directing a program will not be able to provide child care during the program and therefore another adult family member must assume full responsibility for these duties. In addition I understand that neither SAINT PETER S nor any of its employees or students can assume responsibility for the care of adults or children who accompany but are not participants in a study abroad program. Finally, I understand that SAINT PETER S has no responsibility for independent travel by any persons participating or accompanying a program. I understand that, as an individual accompanying a SAINT PETER S study abroad program, my behavior (and/or that of my minor child/children) reflects on the study abroad program and on SAINT PETER S. I understand that I (and/or my minor child/children) may have permission to accompany the study abroad program revoked if a) I (and/or my minor child/children) engage in actions endangering myself or others, or b) my (and/or my minor child/children) conduct is considered to be detrimental or incompatible with the best interest and welfare of the program. If permission to accompany the study abroad program is revoked, I (and/or my minor child/children) agree to leave the study abroad program and return to the USA at my/our own expense. I understand that I (and/or my minor child/children) am subject to the laws of the host country and agree to abide by those laws. I understand that I am responsible for all expenses associated with my (and/or my minor child/children) accompanying the study abroad program and that these expenses cannot be incorporated into the study abroad program budget, and they cannot be part of any reimbursement request or invoice that is submitted to SAINT PETER S. I further agree that any non-refundable expenses for cancellation of arrangements made on my (and/or my minor child/childrens ) behalf will be my sole responsibility. I understand that SAINT PETER S reserves the right to cancel programs in the case of insufficient participation or for other reasons deemed appropriate. SAINT PETER S also reserves the right to change the program including personnel, itinerary and activities. I am aware that it is both inappropriate and culturally insensitive to use this time to promote religious or political agendas; further, such behavior can cause offense and potentially place me (and/or my minor child/children) in harm s way. I understand that I cannot expect to change the society I am visiting and, as a representative of SAINT PETER S, I (and/or my minor child/children) should not engage in such activities. Consequently, I will demonstrate respect for the host culture even though I may not agree with all aspects of that culture, and I understand that behavior that is inconsistent with this statement may lead to the revocation of my (and/or my minor child/childrens ) permission to accompany the study abroad program. I understand that my (and/or my minor child/children) accompanying a study abroad program must not adversely affect the program or program participants and must not impair the operation and administration of group activities associated with the study abroad program, or otherwise infringe on program participants. Further, I understand that I am fully responsible for following the itinerary of the group and for rejoining the group or returning to the program if I am separated. By clicking I agree below, I acknowledge that I have read, understand and accept the conditions governing my accompanying a SAINT PETER S study abroad program. WAIVER OF LIABILITY PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY. It affects any rights you may have if you are injured or otherwise suffer damages while voluntarily participating in this study abroad program. In consideration for my being permitted to accompany this study abroad program, I agree to the following: 1. I agree to release and forever discharge Saint Peter s University, its Board of Trustees, and its officers, agents, and employees, from any and all claims, demands, rights, and causes of action of whatever kind or nature, arising from and by reason of any and all known and unknown, foreseen and unforeseen bodily and personal injuries, including death, damages to property and the consequences thereof, resulting from my participation in a SAINT PETER S study abroad program and related activities. I certify that I am in good health and physically capable of undertaking an intensive program of domestic or foreign travel. I am responsible for determining if there are any immunizations or other health requirements needed to accompany the program. Further, I understand that I am responsible for obtaining medical, evacuation, and repatriation insurance particularly as any insurance I currently have is not likely to apply while I am abroad. I further agree that I shall be subject to the supervision and authority of the faculty/staff in charge and to standards of conduct stipulated by the faculty/staff person in charge. I further acknowledge that the program and site directors have sole authority to make decisions regarding the continued participation of individuals in the program whose conduct may necessitate disciplinary action. SAINT PETER S also has the right to cancel the program due to low enrollments or unforeseen developments. All costs are subject to change because of unanticipated increases in airfares or other program costs, as well as fluctuations in monetary exchange rates. SAINT PETER S will make every effort to keep program costs as advertised and will inform prospective participants of any changes as they occur. Unless it has been expressly agreed to and paid for, I will not receive any benefits from the study abroad program. I am responsible for all costs associated with my and/or my children accompanying a study abroad program. Page 6 of 7 Amazon Rainforest Travel Course Application
