1 Harbor Insurance Agency Reliable. Responsive. Alternatives. Our Quarterly Newsletter Insurance Tips for Back-to-School Time September 2014 Inside this issue: Now is the Time 2 Life & Health Seminars 3 Football Season 3 What s In Your Wallet? 4 Refer - A - Friend 4 Trivia Contest 4 Hurricane Updates 5 Our Mobile App 5 Stay connected with us: As many of you get your children or grandchildren ready to head off to school in the fall, there s one vital to-do to add to your list (other than writing that tuition check): a review of your insurance coverage. It's important to keep in mind that policy language varies from state to state, and there are never "one-size-fits-all" situations, but below is a general guide. If you have questions, or want to go over your insurance needs, don t hesitate to contact us! HOMEOWNERS (may vary by individual policy) Coverage of personal property: Most home policies provide 10 percent of Coverage C (Personal Property) for property owned by an insured that is at a residence other than the insured s. I.E - if the contents of a policyholder s home are insured for $100,000, a student s property up to $10,000 would be covered if living in a dorm provided the damage is caused by a covered peril & the student meets the definition of an insured. For apartments or houses off-campus, the same coverage generally applies. Certain items, such as jewelry or expensive electronics, may require specific coverage, or a rider. Renters insurance is strongly recommended if your policy does not cover a student s personal property. Liability coverage: There usually is an exclusion for damage to property rented to an insured, so generally damage to a dorm/apartment would not be covered. Ensuring adequate coverage: Contact us to get specific answers & information about your coverages. Create an inventory of the items your student is taking to school, as is keeping photos & receipts for the items. Renters insurance: If your student s needs can't be met under your current policy, don't forget renters insurance. Landlords policies generally only cover the structure, not the possessions of renters. AUTO Coverage without a car at school: If your student will continue to drive while at home on school breaks, they should continue to be listed on your policy. If they re attending school more than 100 miles from home, and are not taking a vehicle with them, the policy may qualify for a distant-student discount. Coverage with a car at school: In most cases, a car registered to parents and listed on their policy will be covered if used by a listed student away at school. But make sure that your auto carrier writes coverage in the college s state & location. Note that a change to the principal location of the vehicle may result in a change in premium. Driving a friend s car at school: Students generally would be covered while driving a friend s car if the students are listed on their parents policy & do not have regular use of the vehicle. The coverage would likely be secondary in this case, as the carrier for the friend s vehicle would likely be the primary. Making sure you ve got the right insurance coverage can help you protect your assets as you invest in your child s future. How to protect your most cherished possessions... harboria.com Serving Florida since 1901 While your home insurance is invaluable for covering the loss or destruction of many of your belongings as well as damage to your home s structure, your policy may provide only partial coverage for your most cherished items. The good news is that even if they re not fully covered under your homeowners, with a scheduled personal property endorsement or separate Inland Marine policy, they can be. We can help you determine if a scheduled personal property endorsement or Inland Marine Policy would be a good fit for you. Look around your home and make a list of your cherished possessions. Be sure to consider Jewelry, Antiques, Art Collections, Musical instruments, Silverware/China, Autographed items & Rare or one-of-a-kind items. Once you have taken an inventory, make the time to talk with us; we will review your options with you thoroughly.

3 Harbor Insurance Quarterly Newsletter Page 3 Now Is The Time To Get Your Shots When you're rushing around with 101 other issues to deal with, it's easy to overlook one of the most important contributors to good health immunization. So here's a reason to keep in mind: August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Immunization isn't just something for kids. People of all ages need vaccines: infants, pre teens and teens, younger adults and seniors. So, use this campaign month to check that your own vaccinations are up to date. For adults, it's not just about getting your flu shot either. You might also need protection against tetanus, shingles, HPV and pneumonia and, if you're under 55, even shots for measles, mumps and rubella. Plus, if you travel abroad, you might need other inoculations. If you want to make checking your status easy and a bit of fun, try this quiz from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: quiz after gathering relevant information, it'll tell you exactly which vaccines you may need. Of course if you're unsure about which vaccines you need or if you're not in good health, consult a professional first. 4 Harbor Insurance Quarterly Newsletter Page 4 What s In Your Wallet? Check out who saved money. Find out who plugged a dangerous gap in their insurance. Cindy Jewett Recently wrote Liability for a Contractor. His current agent was not able to provide the coverage required on a large commercial job. He was about to lose the job because of the issue, but we were able to place his coverage and comply with everything the job required, and still keep the premium to within the price range of his original coverage plan. Eric Austin In reviewing a client s Auto Repair Garage Policy renewal (a current customer with our agency), Eric identified that moving them to another insurance carrier that we represent would provide the same insurance protection while saving them over $1,200 annually. The customer didn t have to contact us to review it. They were thrilled that we were proactive and helped reduce their insurance costs. Wanda Gardner By packaging an Excess & Surplus Property and General Liability policy for a Commercial client at renewal, Wanda saved an insured over $850 annually.
