SECURITY MATTERS Helping you understand and protect yourself from risk
Introducing Endsleigh 50 years ago, NUS set up Endsleigh to champion affordable insurance designed for students, when others wouldn t. Today, we are just as dedicated to providing you with the affordable insurance solutions you need, and also to helping you understand and protect yourself from risk. We protect you every day, every hour, every minute, because we know it only takes a second for your world to be turned upside down. We provide contents insurance for 80% of students living in halls and as the UK s No. 1 insurance provider for students, and the only one to be recommended by NUS, we have teamed up with your accommodation provider to arrange some contents insurance for you. This booklet offers you helpful tips and advice to help protect you from risk; from keeping your room safe, to protecting your belongings when you re out and about, through to cyber security. We ve worked with other experts and hope this booklet will help you to make choices which will ensure you enjoy a smooth first year at university. For further information visit us at: endsleigh.co.uk/securitymatters Contributing Experts Adam Tonks, UK Cyber Security Challenge Award Winner 2015 Professor Keith Martin, Royal Holloway, University of London
Your insurance cover Your accommodation provider has arranged some contents insurance for you with Endsleigh. The level of cover varies depending on your university, and at a minimum will give you peace of mind that you re covered for fire, flood and theft within your room. Often, accidental damage is not included and neither is cover for your possessions outside your room. It s easy to check your level of cover using the link below. With Endsleigh s flexible policy, we ve made it simple for you to extend your cover, and since 75%* of students have experienced theft or damage to their phones whilst outside their room, you may choose to extend and personalise your cover to protect the items that matter to your life whilst out and about too. Visit endsleigh.co.uk/reviewcover to: Check your level of cover Review key exclusions and limitations Check your policy excess Learn how to make a claim Extend and personalise your cover to protect laptops, phones and other valuables *Endsleigh Student Lifestyle Survey
What are the chances? Three out of ten students accidentally damage their phone whilst in their university accommodation or at home 3 in 10 43% of students admitted to being uncomfortable without their phone for more than 24 hours 75% of students have experienced theft or damage to their phones whilst out and about 43 % 75 % 4
50 % Of those who had experienced theft or damage to their laptops, 50% had done so outside their homes Only 30% of students back up their laptop content on the cloud 30 % Loss of documents and photos was the biggest concern for 46% of students who lost their laptops 46 % Source: Endsleigh Student Lifestyle Survey
Protecting against damage and fire Accidental damage accounts for over 70%* of Endsleigh student insurance claims 70 % 6
With students owning nearly 4000 worth of possessions it makes sense to know how to avoid accidental damage and fire. Screen damage 44% of students have cracked their phone screens, most often this damage occurs when students are out and about or on a night out**. Investing in a screen protector and phone case will help avoid the cost of repairing your screen if you are not covered by insurance. The cost can range from 40 from a high street replacement service to over 200 for the latest phones repaired in manufacturer approved repairers. There are three varieties of screen protector, PET film (polyethylene terephthalate) TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), and the most expensive and durable is tempered glass. 10% of students have cracked their laptop or tablet screens**. Protective carry cases and avoiding piling heavy items like books, on their surface, are the best way to avoid this. Liquid damage 30% of students have experienced liquid damage to their phone and 8% to their laptop*. Keep liquids away from your gadgets or you ll risk corrosion and being refused warranty repairs. There is lots of contradictory advice about what to do if the worst should happen and your laptop or phone comes in contact with liquid, searching for device specific advice on whether or not to try to use the device or remove the battery is the wisest course of action. Possessions For the other items that matter to your life, whether it s sports equipment, musical instruments, DJ equipment or just your favourite pair of glasses, remember to take precautions to avoid damage. Making sure you have the right insurance cover in place if something does go wrong will protect you financially. Fire Safety Unite Students, the leading provider of student accommodation in the UK, advised that 63% of their fires in 2014 were caused by cooking. So whatever student grub you re rustling up, never leave cooking unattended. * Endsleigh claims data July ** Endsleigh Student Lifestyle Survey
Protecting against theft 1 in 5* students has experienced theft from their person whilst out and about 1 in 5
Though it is unlikely that you will be a victim of crime, you can help protect yourself and your possessions, just by using your own common sense and tips from experts. Protecting from theft whilst out and about 33% of students stolen mobile phones were taken during a night out*. Investing in a cheap pay as you go phone, specifically for nights out, may be useful and you can still capture those all important photos and selfies. Keep a record of your phone s IMEI, you may need this if it is stolen. You can find the IMEI by pressing *#06# into your keypad or ringing your network provider. Phone tracking apps can also be useful visit uk/wheresyours for more advice. If you do lose your phone, call your network or to get it blocked. It is estimated a bike gets stolen once every 60 seconds. Don t underestimate bike thieves some may be wandering past and see a chance, but others are much more considered and calculated even carrying tools! When leaving your bike outside, remove either the saddle or front wheel to deter thieves. The D-lock is the one recommended by most universities and it s simple to use too, but always check with your insurance company to see if there are specific requirements. Protecting from room theft The average value of a student claim for theft from their room is 702**. Think twice before inviting someone you have only just met into your room. When you leave your room, shut and lock doors and windows, and ensure your valuable items are out of sight. Laptops come equipped with a small hole in which you can affix a Kensington Lock, securing the device to a cable anchored in your room. Disguise is always an option; there are some clever ideas out there, such as tablet cases disguised as books and laptop cases that look like standard packing envelopes. Etsy.com is a great resource for uniquely designed cases that may help. * Endsleigh Student Lifestyle Survey 2015 ** Endsleigh claims data July
Cyber security 80% of identity theft in the first three months of 2015 was attempted or perpetrated online* 80 % 10
You don t need a lot of technical knowledge to protect yourself online, by taking a few simple steps you can decrease the risk of losing your money or your files. Passwords Research has found that approximately 50% of all user passwords tend to follow basic password structures such as using their birth date or graduation year, along with a single capital letter and only a couple of digits, making it much easier for hackers to decrypt**. Don t use the same password for every website. At face value, this sounds difficult to manage, but you can get a password manager to do this for you most browsers have these built in, and will give you the option of remembering a website s password when you register. This will ensure you are protected in the event that a website is hacked - the attacker will get your username and password but won t be able to use it anywhere else. A new study reveals that a third of the UK population believes that smartphone payments will overtake credit and debit card payments by 2020, creating huge opportunities for fraudsters**. Keep backups A recent trend in cybercrime has been that of ransomware software will get onto your computer, encrypt your files (so that you re unable to access them), and ask for money to get them back. Software, such as Backblaze, that back up your files to the cloud, are a good way to protect against this it s cheap too, usually around 3-4/month. Not only is software like this really simple to set up, but it helps in the event that your hard drive breaks too! Viruses Antivirus software isn t foolproof, and will not protect you from all types of attack. Don t open attachments on s or instant messages (even from people you think you know it might not really be them), unless they were expected. Likewise, if you get an from your bank, don t click the links go there directly the could be an attempt to steal your details. * Cifas: ** Experian: 11
24 HOURS 5ORTED 74% of students would want their phone replaced within a couple of days* Because we know that life grinds to a halt without your laptop and phone, once we ve approved your claim, we replace your item in 24 hours. I was so impressed by the quick & efficient service provided by Endsleigh. My mind was put at rest as I was back up and running within 24 hours. Paige, Student *Endsleigh Student Lifestyle Survey 2015 Endsleigh Insurance Services Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
