V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 5 THE PULSE OF LEGACY T H E L E G A C Y P R E P A R A T O R Y C H A R T E R A C A D E M Y Javier Chaparro Director "Let's make it happen!" W E E K L Y N E W S L E T T E R Message from the Director During the last visit from school leadership, we observed great instructional practices going on in classrooms such as, welcoming classrooms, implementation of engagement strategies, students collaboration, group activities, plenty of anchor charts, student work samples, etc We still have work to do in the following areas: adherence to the PBL protocol, frequent implementation of checks for understanding, and questioning strategies. This last part can improve by being strategic in our lesson planning, ie., to plan the lessons (lesson design) prior to create the lesson plans. The following is an excerpt related to being strategic when planning and delivering our lessons from "Never Work Harder than your Students and Other Principles of Great Teaching" by Robyn Jackson. "Master teachers use their time differently than other teachers. They spend more time planning than teaching, and on asking students questions rather than talking themselves. Master teachers spend more time designing quality assignments and assessments than they do creating volumes of work for their students and themselves. Master teachers know that it is not the amount of work that is important, it is the quality of the work that matters. As a result, they do not waste time on assignments or activities that will not effectively move students toward mastery. Master teachers understand that knowing what to stop doing is just as important as knowing what to continue doing. Master teachers are strategic about what they teach and how they teach it. They understand that it is the quality, not the quantity of learning experiences that matter. Master teachers first determine what students absolutely need to know and how well they need to know it before deciding on what learning activities they will use to help students master the objectives. "As we enter into the 4th week of school, let's make sure we continue to prepare our students and be laser-focused on those high leverage TEKS that will support our students be successful in meeting their grade level goals. Have a great instructional week! Instructional Walks and Lesson Planning

I became a member of Omega PSI PHI fraternity Inc. While attending college I continued playing football, as Defensive Back/Outside Line Backer. I graduated with a degree in Business Administration. in My favorite subjects are both Business and Science. I enjoy many areas of my life but my most prized area is spending time with my six year old daughter. Happy to be teaching sixth grade science, here at Legacy. My next step in my career will be a Real Estate business, fulfilling my desire to own my own business and travel the world someday. On a more personal note I love to eat, shop, travel, as well enjoys fishing. STUDENT OF THE WEEK Legacy Role model of the week is Kayren Cox, who admires Liza Koshi, American YouTuber, comedian, actress, dancer, and motivational speaker. Kayren also said that Liza initially caught her attention by not being afraid to talk about the struggles of being a brown girl. Representing what Kayren believes! Kayren is in the top 10% of her class. She spends her time working at Starbucks or playing volleyball. Kayren displays leadership qualities and loves to be connected with her peers
Ms. Lozano's students eager to participate in question of the week. what's going on at legacy? Students in Ms. Bookmans class continue to work hard during P.E.,while Mr. Abeu's students work collaboratively on projects. Cain s Humanities class working on a century character sketch with a biography - visual art of the Progressive Era, which took place from 1890 to Progressive era is when many social movements took place, such as women right to vote, prohibition of alcohol, people having a voice in the election of senators, etc.
homecoming spirit week Our awesome teachers and students got the opportunity to participate in Homecoming week where they got to dress as their favorite book character, Disney character, and their favorite meme/vine.
BY GABRIELLE WALLACE: GATHERING DATA ON STUDENT MASTERY: PART 2 Gathering Data on Student Mastery Part 2 There are several techniques to gathering student data through questioning observation. Check out the following and add them to your instructional toolbox: 4. TRACKING, NOT WATCHING. Be intentional about how you scan your classroom. Decide specifically what you re looking for and remain disciplined about it in the face of a thousand distractions. Watch Clip 5. SHOW ME. Flip the classroom dynamic in which the teacher gleans data from a passive group of students. Have students actively show evidence of their understanding. Watch the following clips: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3 6. AFFIRMATIVE CHECKING. Insert specific points into your lesson when students must get confirmation that their work is correct, productive, or sufficiently rigorous before moving on to the next stage. Watch following clips: Example 1 and Example 2 Resource Credit: Teach Like a Champion 2.0 Resources Clip 1: Clip 2: Clip 3: 4? Clip 4: Clip 5: 4? Clip 6: 4?
Coaches Corner The MS Lady Wolves played in two home games this week. A+ Academy on Tuesday 10/09/18, and Thursday 10/11/18 against St. Anthony. We won in the 2nd set against A+ but fell short against St. Anthony. Our record is now 4-2 halfway through the season. The attached pictures include our Team Captains for the 2018 season, Cori Brown and Naidelyn Sanchez. As a coach, I do not solely focus on the talent of an individual when selecting Team Captains. It is my belief that talent is a minor attribute in the wide array of characteristics that I look for. During my process of selecting team captains, I look for Coach-ability, academic achievements, leadership qualities, work ethic, and reliability.
