4 The Mission of the Joint Research Centre As the Commission's in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre's mission is to provide EU policies with independent, evidence-based scientific and technical support throughout the whole policy cycle. Working in close cooperation with policy Directorates-General, the JRC addresses key societal challenges while stimulating innovation through developing new methods, tools and standards, and sharing its knowhow with the Member States, the scientific community and international partners.

11 Public health scene setter Economic impact of cancer and cardivascular disease In a study published in the Lancet in 2013, the cost of cancer in the EU was estimated at 126 billion per year (EuropeanVoice, 30 October, 2014) Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in Europe (kills 4 million people a year in Europe and almost 2 million people a year in the EU) and the cost to the EU economy (i.e. economic burden) is estimated at almost 200 billion (EuropeanVoice, 27 November, 2014) EU budget is 140 b/year 11
