2 2 Inventory of the Southern Baptist Convention Press Kit Collection AR 375 Summary Main Entry: Southern Baptist Convention Press Kit Collection Date Span: 1845 Abstract: Collection consists of information and materials related to the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. Most of the material was distributed as information to the press covering the convention meetings and events. The items in the collection span the years 1845 to the present, with most of the material dating from The collection includes sermons and addresses, clippings, daily bulletins, convention calendars, advance stories, press releases, programs for the convention, and related meetings, agency reports and information distributed at the convention. Size: 13 linear ft. (29 document boxes) Collection #: AR 375 Historical Sketch The Southern Baptist Convention was formed in 1845 and began holding triennial meetings. By the 1870 s, the convention began holding annual meetings to conduct its business. The annual meeting of the SBC includes reports of the agencies of the convention, recommendations of the Executive Committee, committee reports, motions and resolutions presented by messengers to the convention, addresses and sermons, and elections of officers. Baptist Press was formed in 1946 as a method to provide information to the media about events, ministries, happenings, and people in Baptist life. Press kits were compiled by the staff of Baptist Press. Scope and Content Note The Southern Baptist Convention Press Kit Collection (13 linear ft.) consists of information material related to the annual session of the Southern Baptist Convention. Most of the material was distributed as information to the press covering the convention events and meetings. Some material was simply collected at the meeting and added to this collection. The material in the collection spans the years 1845 to the present, with most of the material dating from Annual additions are anticipated for this collection. The major topics and issues included in the papers are: addresses and sermons, clippings, daily bulletins, convention calendars, advance stories, press releases, programs for the convention, and related meetings, agency reports, and information distributed at the session.
