1 Georgia Vehicle Abandonment CHECKLIST Following is the step-by-step process required to legally auction an abandoned vehicle in the state of Georgia, including the documents you must complete and send. Asterisks indicate an example of the form is attached. For Use by Tower/Dealer Submit Form MV-603 Notice of Abandoned Vehicle and Request for Information to the Department of Revenue/Motor Vehicle Division within seven days after the vehicle becomes abandoned, along with a $2 research fee. Send notification letter* to owner/lienholder within five calendar days of receiving Georgia Motor Vehicle Division Vehicle, Title and Tag information. Letter must include that information and a detailed breakdown of charges.* Letter must be sent via certified or registered mail, or statutory overnight delivery. If the state replies with no information found, you must place advertising* once a week for two consecutive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation in the county where the vehicle was obtained (may require a fee). If no such newspaper is available, advertisement may be posted at the county courthouse. Advertisement must include: a. A complete vehicle description. b. License and vehicle identification numbers. c. Location from which the vehicle was initially removed. d. Present location of the vehicle. e. A statement that the vehicle has been deemed abandoned and will be disposed of if not claimed. Obtain affidavit of publication from the newspaper (may require a fee). If the owner/lienholder fails to pay for and pick up the vehicle, or fails to petition the court for a judicial hearing within 10 days of the notification letter s delivery, file Form MV-603A Abandoned Vehicle Affidavit ($10 fee plus possible certification fee). The petition must be filed in the county where your facility is located. Include a detailed breakdown of charges*, a copy of all paperwork generated during the abandonment process and, if required by the county, a completed court order (request certified copy if applicable).
