2 P A G E 2 Volunteers Needed KRD Federal Credit Union was founded on the credit union philosophy PEOPLE HELP- ING PEOPLE. As a not-for-profit organization, volunteers play important roles in our success. Credit Union volunteers represent the ownership and give direction to what they want from their credit union. Therefore, we are always looking for dedicated volunteers to help serve in a variety of volunteer capacities. There s nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer Happy 110th Birthday Credit Unions Credit unions have come a long way since mill workers in Manchester, NH chartered the first U.S. credit union in 1909 in order to pool their savings and make loans to each other. That credit union, St. Mary's Bank, now serves 106,000 members. In 1970, Congress creates the National Credit Union Administration as an independent agency to charter and supervise federal credit unions. The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund was also formed, insuring share deposits up to $20,000. Until this point, credit unions had operated without federal deposit insurance. The coverage increased to $100,000 in 1979, equaling to the amount of deposit insurance coverage for banks. And finally in 2008, coverage increased to $250,000. Credit unions continued to thrive with a few setbacks over the years and in the financial crisis in 2007 where the existence of credit unions were tested. Fortunately, the economy and credit unions bounced back and in June 2012, federally insured credit unions assets exceed $1 trillion for the first time. Today, nationwide, Scholarship Announcement KRD is offering the 13th Annual Scholarship award this spring. To be eligible the student must be a member of KRD, between the ages of 16 and 21 and pursuing a secondary education for the 2019/2020 school term. Students must submit a 500 word typewritten essay on If you were to rename KRD what would it be and why? Two $500 scholarships will be awarded. Essay cover letters are available on our website or at the office. Essay deadline is March 20th. Good luck to all that submit essays and best wishes for a very successful future to all the area graduates. some 5,600 credit unions provide a wide range of financial services to 118 million members. As a credit union member, you not only help yourself to a brighter financial future, but also help your fellow members. Your savings are used to fund loans, and the interest you pay on loans helps keep the credit union financially viable. The more you participate in all of the benefits of belonging, the more productive your credit union can be. That will help us continue to serve you and to celebrate our birthday year after year. If you want to invest in something with minimum risk and a guaranteed big return, invest in yourself. C R E D I T U N I O N C H R O N I C L E S

4 P A G E 4 Have you moved? Sunny skies and springtime flowers are often synonymous with moving day. If the change of season is ushering in a change of address for you and your family, remember to let KRD know. It's our job to keep you informed, and your financial information safe and secure, but we must have your current information on file in order to do so. In addition to address changes, let us know about any phone number or address updates as well. Why You Should Get Your Free Annual Credit Report As data breaches and identity theft become increasingly common, it's more important than ever to keep tabs on your credit. By law, every 12 months you're entitled to a free credit report compiled by the three credit reporting agencies. The three agencies - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion - have set up a central website, a toll-free telephone number, and a mailing address through which you can order your report. For your free report, do not contact the credit reporting companies individually. To order, visit Share Rates t.com or call Or, complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form available at and mail it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box , Atlanta, GA You may order your reports from each of agencies at the same time, but by ordering your report from each of them one at a time, you can space out your requests over the 12- month period. This way, you will get more up-to-date information. Annualcreditreport.com is the only website through which you can access your mandated free report. It's likely they are a scam, or trick you into paying a monthly fee once a trial period expires. Identity theft continues to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. ID theft is a crime where a thief steals your personal information, such as your full name or Social Security number, to commit fraud. The identity thief can use your information to fraudulently apply for credit. The best way to protect yourself from fraud are to be alert of the potential risks and know what is on your report. 5 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 0 P A G E 5 A Special "Thank You" To Our Members As member-owned and operated financial institutions, a solid and secure member base is at the heart of every successful credit union worldwide. As we reflect on 2018 at KRD we want to send a special "thankyou" to our members for their support and loyalty. At KRD, we strive every day to put our members first and uphold the motto of "People Helping People," through exceptional service, affordable financial solutions, valuable financial education, and community assistance. Like our members, we strongly believe in the idea of a democratic, not-for-profit financial cooperative. A lot has changed for us over the decades, since KRD s beginning in 1964 with the Bureau of Reclamation. We have expanded the field of membership and merged with St. Patrick s Church Credit Union to the Credit Union we are today with almost 2400 members. As we grow and provide new services, our name no longer fits. In the coming months, KRD will rebrand to a new name and a new look to better reflect the members we serve. Rest assured, we will continue to provide the quality services that we are well known for. We hope you accept our heartfelt gratitude, and know that we look forward to providing you and your loved ones with continued quality financial products, services, and superior member service in the year ahead.
