Our Investment Philosophy At The Mattson Group, our investment philosophy is to construct and manage portfolios from the bottom up, carefully assessing the ongoing quality of each security by adhering to a strict discipline. Our ability to draw on the research capabilities of Morgan Stanley provides us with the resources needed to implement our core portfolio management discipline, Investing for Growth. The Investing for Growth Strategy seeks capital appreciation through a discipline of using future earnings estimates. This strategy centers around the understanding of how security analysts estimate the future earnings of companies. The principle that drives this strategy is based on the constant changes in earnings estimates made by security analysts. Many times analysts have to adjust upward or downward their earnings estimates. Future earnings estimate adjustments are the basis for the Investing for Growth Strategy. Increases in the earnings estimates for a company is the most important determinant of a higher stock price over time. Nothing correlates more strongly with a rising stock price than increasing earnings estimates. This is the focal point of the Investing for Growth Strategy. In the Investing for Growth Strategy a stock is bought when an analyst has raised his or her earnings estimates at least twice within a six month period. Research indicates that when an analyst has raised the earnings estimate twice within a six month period, the probability is high they will raise them again. Conversely, a stock should be sold when the analyst lowers his or her earnings estimates. The real potential profit comes when an analyst changes the earnings forecast many times. Past performance has shown that three out of four stocks in this strategy experienced a positive change in earnings estimates by analysts after they were purchased. For the Investing for Growth Strategy to work effectively, ten or more stocks are recommended in a portfolio. This diversified portfolio will consist of stocks that satisfy the Investing for Growth Strategy. Investors must be patient. Stock ownership of more than two years may be required for this strategy to properly demonstrate above average results. Finally, this strategy is not for every investor. It is for investors who are seeking capital appreciation and have an understanding of risk. THE MATTSON GROUP 9
