The Benefits of Tax Free Savings
Save without paying tax Invest in a diversified ETF portfolio Achieve your life goals Easy & Affordable
Important to Note Foreign ETFs are subject to offshore dividend tax which is not recovered. The portfolio manager will also levy a management fee against the ETF. See www.etfsa.co.za for the expense ratios and factsheets of the various ETFs.
What is an ETF?
An ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) is a fund that tracks a specific index representing a basket of underlying assets such as equity, bonds, property, preference shares etc. An ETF trades like a normal listed share on a Stock Exchange and is regularly updated in terms of a mandate by the relevant issuer.
The chart above highlights an annual R33 000 investment in the TFSA growing at 10% per annum. Assuming a 25% tax rate, the taxed investment of R500 000 will be worth R1.8m after 25 years. In TFSA, you will have an additional R1 000 000 in your pocket!

R33 000 per tax year R500 000 over lifetime
Withdrawals
The Receiver of Revenue states that an investor can deposit a maximum of R33 000 per annum into the account without incurring any penalties. So a couple of scenarios below explain this. If the investor withdraws from the investment at any time, he or she will not incur any penalties. If the investor deposited R33 000, withdraws the money and then redeposits R33 000 within the same tax year, the Receiver will deem that a total deposit of R66 000 has been made. You will be penalised on R33 000 by paying marginal tax on that amount. If the investor deposited R33 000, withdraws the money and then deposits R33 000 within the following tax year, the Receiver will deem that a total deposit of R33 000 has been made. No penalties will be incurred.

Which ETFs do I invest in and what should my investment strategy be? It all depends on your risk profile. You may select a high, medium or low risk option on the mandate document you complete with us. The low risk option (income) is simply an investment in cash, earning interest at the rate set by the JSE Trustees. For the medium risk option (balanced) we would recommend the NEWFUNDS MAPPS GROWTH ETF which is invested in South African Equities, Bonds and Cash. For the medium to high risk option (equity) we suggest the SATRIX40 ETF, which tracks the JSE Top40 Index. Can I choose my own ETF? Yes you can. Simply tick Option D on your mandate document. If you want to change the selection, please contact your Afrifocus portfolio manager. He will also provide you with an updated list of ETFs approved for the TFSA.
