The state s August rate was the lowest since September 2008 when it also was 7.0 percent. There were 656,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 9,391,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 7.3 percent in August. Florida s unemployment rate was 0.3 percentage point lower than the U.S. rate and was below the national rate for the sixth consecutive month. Florida s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 7,543,700 in August 2013, a decrease of 4,700 jobs (-0.1 percent) over the month. The number of jobs in the state was up 131,400 from August a year ago, an increase of 1.8 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs was up 1.6 percent over the year. 12.0 United States and Florida Unemployment Rates (seasonally adjusted) Florida United States 10.0 8.0 Percent 6.0 4.0 2.0 0.0 Aug-03 Feb-04 Aug-04 Feb-05 Aug-05 Feb-06 Aug-06 Feb-07 Aug-07 Feb-08 Source: U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Local Area Unemployment Statistics Program, in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Labor Market Statistics. Florida s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted) The number of jobs in Florida was 7,543,700 in August 2013, up 131,400 jobs compared to a year ago. August 2013 was the 37 th consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for over three years. The industry gaining the most jobs was trade, transportation, and utilities (+52,400 jobs, +3.4 percent). Other industries gaining jobs included leisure and hospitality (+21,900 jobs, +2.2 percent); professional and business services (+21,300 jobs, +2.0 percent); construction (+19,500 jobs, +5.7 percent); private education and health services (+11,700 jobs, +1.1 percent); financial activities (+6,800 jobs, +1.4 percent); information (+2,200 jobs, +1.7 percent); and other services (+2,100 jobs, +0.7 percent). These industry job gains were partially due to increases in food and beverage stores; food services and drinking places; architectural, engineering, and related; specialty trade contractors; ambulatory health care services; real estate; and membership associations and organizations. Total government (-5,800 jobs, -0.5 percent) and manufacturing (-700 jobs, -0.2 percent) lost jobs over the year. These industry job losses were partially due to declines in federal government and miscellaneous durable goods manufacturing. Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In August 2013, Monroe County had the state s lowest unemployment rate (4.0 percent), followed by Walton County (4.1 percent); Okaloosa County (4.7 percent); and Franklin and St. Johns counties (5.2 percent each). Many of the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government employment. Seasonal tourism also was a contributing factor. Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (15.4 percent) in Florida in August 2013, followed by Flagler and St. Lucie counties (10.1 percent each) and Indian River and Putnam counties (9.4 percent each). Many of the counties with the highest unemployment rates in August had seasonal declines in agriculture and related industries. There were three Florida counties with double-digit unemployment in August, down from four in July. Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Nineteen of the 22 metro areas in the state had over-the-year job gains in August 2013. The areas with the largest gains were Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+41,700 jobs, +3.6 percent), Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach (+22,700 jobs, +3.1 percent), and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+19,400, +1.9 percent). The three metro areas that lost jobs over the year were Panama City-Lynn Haven-Panama City Beach (-2,700 jobs, -3.6 percent), Palm Coast (-600 jobs, -2.9 percent), and Lakeland-Winter Haven (-300 jobs, -0.2 percent). Note: The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data. Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information, go to: http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm The mission of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is to promote economic prosperity for all Floridians and businesses through successful workforce, community, and economic development strategies. Please visit www.floridajobs.org for more information. The next Florida Employment and Unemployment release will be October 18, 2013, at 10:00 A.M. 2
