A Message from our Chief Executive First Quarter, 2012 If the first quarter is any reflection of the year ahead, we should be looking forward to a promising 2012. Not only did the industry benefit from low catastrophe activity but, according to AonBenfield s Market Outlook published in April, analyst consensus earnings for public reinsurers predict industry returns on equity rebounding from 3 percent in 2011, due to catastrophe losses and lower investment yields, to the 10 percent range in 2012 and 2013. During April 1 renewals, which are mainly concentrated within the Japanese market, there were clear signs of improvement primarily driven by the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami and the flooding in Thailand. The experience of such major losses within a single year reinforced the value of reinsurance. While we would have liked to see more fundamental changes in the way the Japanese market is structured at the April 1 renewal, there was enough improvement for XL s Operations to increase our overall aggregates by 53% as compared to April 1 2011 renewal. We are also seeing some progress in the U.S. Casualty market, particularly Excess Liability and E&O. Yes, the winds of change are finally starting to blow across the industry. Positive pricing momentum with improving terms and conditions are evident in certain lines of business, particularly catastrophe exposed short tail lines. Based on this, we expect that U.S. mid-year wind renewals will continue to move in a positive direction. While there is clearly still room for improvement in various geographies and business lines, particularly in the Casualty area in general, by adhering to our core strengths of disciplined underwriting, reliable analytics and high quality services we believe that we can continue to weather any challenging, competitive conditions. This confidence is based on our Operations track record of success, which includes producing an underwriting profit for six consecutive years and achieving very good results during the first quarter of this year. In turn, this contributed significantly to XL s overall solid performance and progress. You can read more about our first quarter results, our key contacts and the coverage we offer in this brochure. Of course, we are proud of our performance but we realize that we could not have accomplished these results without the support of trusted brokers and ceding partners. So thank you for your continuing confidence in us. Given the improving environment, XL s global footprint, deep talent pool, and long-term market relationships, I am optimistic about the year ahead for our industry and for XL.
