Environmental, Social and Governance Forum ESG Responsible Investing Going Mainstream Contributions from: HSBC GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT M&G INVESTMENTS CHURCH COMMISSIONERS FOR ENGLAND UBS ABERDEEN STANDARD INVESTMENTS EVERSHEDS SUTHERLAND BESTRUSTEES KPMG CLIMATE BONDS INITIATIVE SUSTAINALYTICS One Day Conference Thursday 4 October 2018 Canary Riverside Plaza Hotel, Canary Wharf, London E14 8RS

ESG is no longer a philanthropic niche. Views on ethical, responsible and sustainable investing are evolving and refining. Institutions are becoming increasingly concerned about risk, seeing the need now to avoid certain sectors which may start to face structural problems, making them poor long term investments. Add to this the weight of governments and regulators and it is not hard to see how ESG will continue to shape investment strategies across the financial services industry, especially in the asset and fund management sector, and for pension funds and trustees. The growing list of initiatives including the UN s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Climate Change Agreement, Principles of Responsible Investment, G20 s EU Action Plan on Sustainable Finance, the UK Green Finance Taskforce, IORP II and EU Shareholder Rights Directive are drawing attention to ESG as never before. But do ESG strategies mean accepting lower returns at least in the short term? Do investors know what they are getting? What is the effect of the changing regulatory landscape on the asset management sector with regard to ESG? How do companies translate ethical policy into investment strategies? Partnerships are crucial to success; what should firms be looking for? What do DC schemes need to consider when incorporating ESG factors and in discharging their responsibilities on ESG? How should DB schemes, focusing on de risking, reconsider their fiduciary duties with regard to ESG? How do pension funds assess and monitor managers activities? What are the investment opportunities with regard to green bonds? You are invited to discuss these and many other questions at Westminster and City s conference on ESG. This growing and extremely important subject is gaining in importance across financial services and will continue to dominate the agenda for the foreseeable future. Chairman Troy Mortimer Head of Responsible Investing KPMG

Evolution and Integration of ESG Where to From Here? What are the opportunities/risks in developing an embedded ESG investment process? How can working partnerships drive engagement? What are the ESG issues and is it more than just climate change? How can these be fully incorporated into the investment decision making process? Will the rise of the millennial market drive further change? Is ESG investing poised to become the new normal? Amanda Young Head of Global ESG Research ABERDEEN STANDARD INVESTMENTS Integrating ESG into Investment Strategies in an Evolving Landscape The first quarter of 2018 saw the publication of two major reports on sustainable finance the EU Action Plan on Sustainable Finance and the UK Green Finance Taskforce report both recommending measures to mobilise capital to deliver a more sustainable economy. What does this focus from policy-makers mean and what should we expect with regard to changing regulations? How may it impact on the development of new ESG investment strategies and the communication of those strategies? Stephanie Maier Director Responsible Investment HSBC GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT The Added Value of Shareholder Engagement This session will provide an overview of best practice in stewardship in line with the revised EU Shareholder Rights Directive. Discussion will cover the value of investors dialogue with companies, the opportunities for collaboration, the linkage with investment decisions and practical suggestions for effective shareholder engagement. The presentation will also elaborate on the role of pension funds to assess and monitor investment managers' activities. Valeria Piani Director, Sustainable Investing UBS A Trustee Perspective The Pensions Regulator issued guidance on ESG last year and clearly stated the TPR s expectations of trustees on ESG factors. IORP II, to be adopted before Jan 2019, further reinforces the need for action. What should trustees consider in terms of ongoing and long term risk, their responsibilities on ESG and on committing to new investment strategies? What are the implications for pension funds and trustees going forward? Alan Pickering Chairman BESTRUSTEES The Law and Regulation To What Extent is it Required, Desirable or Even Possible? Traditionally, there has been an aversion to allowing ethical factors to influence investment decisions, and this has been reflected in the courts approach to policing the parameters of trustees

investment powers. However, momentum has been building behind the view that ESG factors ought to be deployed as positive identifiers of profitable and secure investments. To what extent does the traditional aversion to ESG investing continue to prevail in pensions law and regulation? How might the status quo be expected to evolve in the immediate and longer term? Simon Daniel Principal Associate, Pensions EVERSHEDS SUTHERLAND ESG Measuring the Impact and Quantifying the Financial Implications An increasing body of academic evidence links ESG performance to financial performance. But investors need to take a nuanced approach: ESG change and engagement are the drivers. Measurement of ESG impacts will be the new normal for asset managers a timely development, but how to do it properly? Do we need to recognise the limits of measurability: "not everything that counts can be counted"? Ben Constable-Maxwell Director of Corporate Finance, Stewardship & Responsible Investment M&G INVESTMENTS Working with Managers on Responsible Investment The Church Commissioners have implemented responsible investment policies across a wide range of asset classes for many years. How do they translate their policies into practical actions? What do they look for from their asset managers on investment restrictions and ESG? How do they monitor implementation? Edward Mason Head of Responsible Investment CHURCH COMMISSIONERS FOR ENGLAND Green and Climate Bonds How Do They Fit into Portfolios? This session will give an overview of the global green bonds market: the figures, key players, trends and developments. It will look at the climate change initiatives and the solutions including climate (fixed income) investment opportunities. How do these translate into the green bonds markets and how could they help to fulfil fiduciary duties? Manuel Adamini Director, Investor Outreach & Partners Programme CLIMATE BONDS INITIATIVE Sustainability Ratings and Company Evaluation Given the increasing demand for ESG information by asset owners and investment managers, sophisticated, highquality research and data to assess ESG risks is more important than ever before. But with the rapid acceleration of ESG investing, what type of insights and data are needed to best support investors current decision-making processes? Eimear Toomey Director, Client Relations SUSTAINALYTICS
