Introduction Consortium staff sometimes have to drive while they are at work for example to go to Training Courses or to take the people we support out in the Community. This policy explains how staff can be safe whilst driving during work time. The Aims of this Policy To help staff to be safe when they have to drive while working for the Consortium. This could be using Consortium vehicles or their own cars. To help staff know how to drive safely so they can help the people we support to live the life they choose. What must staff do to drive safely? They must have a valid Driving Licence which is legal - this says if a staff member can drive by law in the United Kingdom. Page 2 of 6
They must drive safely and not too fast They must not have drunk alcohol or taken any illegal substances or other medication that could make them feel tired before driving or while they are driving. They must not smoke in the car which is used for driving other staff or people we support. They must not use their mobile phone whilst driving. They must stop if a crash happens Staff must take regular rest breaks so they are not too tired to drive if they have to drive for a long time. Staff and passengers must wear a seat belt at all times. Page 3 of 6
They must tell the Chief Executive and Director of Operations at the Consortium if they have points on their licence which may stop them from driving. The car must have Tax and MOT which says the car is safe to drive. Staff must have Business Insurance Class 1 this is because they are driving while they are working. Staff must check the car is safe to drive by checking the Tyres, Oil, Water, Lights are working properly How will the Consortium make sure staff are safe when they are driving during work? The Consortium will make sure that any Consortium vehicles are checked so they are safe and legal to drive. Page 4 of 6
Staff are to fill out a Driving for Work Risk Assessment which tells them how to keep safe when driving they are to sign this form to say they understand the risks when they are driving. Tell staff how to check the cars before they drive them so they are clean and safe, write down what they have checked and keep the record in the car. Place No Smoking signs in ALL Consortium vehicles The Consortium will not pay for any fines that staff have for parking in places where it is against the law. Having an accident while driving If staff have an accident while driving for work they must report it to the Consortium. If someone is hurt in the accident staff must phone the Police and an Ambulance Page 5 of 6
If the accident involves another person staff must ask them for their Insurance details. Staff must also report the accident to the Consortium by filling in Accident Records. Page 6 of 6
