COMMUNITY CORNER TDECU EMPLOYEE RECEIVES DIRECTOR S PATHFINDER AWARD TDECU is proud to recognize Todd Lucas, Vice President of Business and Commercial Services, for receiving the U.S. Small Business Administration s (SBA) 2017 Director s Pathfinder Award. Each year, the SBA Houston District presents the award to a lender that is leading the way in both their community and industry. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, Todd showed exceptional leadership in providing support to affected businesses and in helping speed the path to recovery. Tim Jeffcoat, District Director of the SBA Houston District Office said, Todd Lucas was the first lender to offer a bridge loan to help businesses as they went through the process of SBA disaster lending. IRS IMPOSTERS TARGETING TAXPAYERS As tax season begins, tax scammers are already hard at work. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has received thousands of complaints about one kind of scammer in particular IRS imposters. Scammers posing as IRS officials call and say you owe taxes, threatening to arrest or deport you, revoke your license, or even shut down your business if you don t pay right away. They also rig caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from Washington, D.C. They will instruct you to put the money on a prepaid debit card and tell them the number something no government agency would ask you to do. The IRS will not ask you to pay with prepaid debit cards or wire transfers, nor do they ask for credit card numbers over the phone. The IRS will contact you about unpaid taxes through the mail. Tax identity theft victims typically find out about the crime when they receive a letter from the IRS saying more than one tax return was filed in their name, or IRS records show they received wages from an employer they don t know. If you receive a letter like this, don t panic. Contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800.908.4480. If you re a victim of tax identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov. Scammers may know your Social Security number or at least the last four digits making you believe it really is the IRS calling. If you owe or think you owe federal taxes, call the IRS at 800.829.1040 or go to IRS.gov. IRS workers can help you with any payment questions. Please report any IRS imposter scams to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) online or at 800.366.4484, and to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. TDECU CONNECTION February 2018 4

SHOW SOME HEART ON VALENTINE'S DAY! 5 TDECU CONNECTION February 2018

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS It s important to know your flowers and what those flowers symbolize. Red roses are traditionally the flowers representing love. Buying flowers as a nice gesture for a colleague, teacher or friend? Consider mixed bouquets, or a plant such as an orchid. Florists advise asking for a fresh cut on your flower arrangements, which will enable them to last longer. If you are giving bouquets without vases, make sure to cut the stems and put them in fresh water as soon as possible. The key to longer-lasting arrangements is changing the water daily and removing any wilting blooms as soon as possible. MORE THAN JUST ONE DAY DINNER DECISIONS A successful Valentine s Day requires planning. This year consider what your sweetheart wants. Would he or she be interested in a fancy dinner out at a special restaurant? Or, would they be just as content with an evening spent at home? Discussing with your significant other what they have in mind is important. If they want a fancy night on the town, you must think ahead. Plan babysitters and select an outfit ahead of time; do not wait until the last minute. Consider celebrating with a dinner out one or two days in advance to avoid crowds. If you re staying at home and making a special meal, get to the grocery store early to select the best meats and produce available. Effort and attention always win the prize for favorite gift. Valentine s Day is more than just one day. It s wonderful to celebrate your spouse, special friends and children for one day of the year, but it s even more important to keep the appreciation going. Treat your significant other to a special date, just because. Plan the evening, take the kids to Grandma s and have fun doing something different like visiting a museum or seeing a play. Treat Valentine s Day not just as an opportunity to tell the people in your life you care about them, but to also show them your commitment. Try doing fun days with your kids where they pick a family activity. Keep the commitment to showing your appreciation throughout the year and you will see the benefits of your actions. HELP OTHERS Valentine s Day can be challenging for those who have recently experienced a loss or live alone. Consider donating your time to organizations like Meals on Wheels, which provides hot food and human interaction with home-bound individuals. There are often Valentine s Day events at Senior Living facilities or nursing homes, as the elderly are especially in need of companionship. Ask if you can assist with any of these events, or have your family make cards for the residents. Taking the time to invest in those most in need shows what the spirit of Valentine s Day is all about. TDECU CONNECTION February 2018 6

NEW YEAR, NEW COVERAGE Now is the best time to re-evaluate your insurance coverage. The start of the new year is the ideal time to take a moment to inventory your personal possessions. In case you ever have to file a home insurance claim, having an updated list of all possessions in your home can save you a lot of time. Also consider making a video for documentation purposes. Keep the video and list in a secure place, such as a safe deposit box. TDECU Insurance Agency, LLC is here to help you with all of your coverage options. A member of our team will be happy to review your coverage and compare quotes to help you save money. In addition, use this time to do a life insurance check. The team at TDECU Insurance suggests you have some personal coverage, aside from your employer-offered insurance, to avoid being uninsured should you stop working, change jobs, or move to a job that does not offer life insurance. For more information, visit us at TDECUInsurance.org or call 888.833.7358. Insurance products are not deposits, not NCUA insured and not guaranteed by TDECU Insurance Agency, LLC or Texas Dow Employees Credit Union. 9 TDECU CONNECTION February 2018
