The new look of rtn.org incorporates an easy-to-read design, with a pleasing mixture of colors both soothing and vibrant, and an overall welcoming tone. The sharp design allows for easy navigation, with online account access available on every page. Upgraded features include videos from members of the RTN community and blog posts that are updated regularly. On the home page, users can view rates, find out about RTN products and services, and read Credit Union news. Do I Save for My Retirement or My Children s Education? Content developed by CUNA Brokerage Services, provided by Michael Beck and Douglas Stocklan Many Americans are facing a difficult choice. Do they save for their own retirement or save for their children s education? Here are some things to think about when wrestling with this decision. Are you paying for college or helping to pay? Some parents decide that their kids should contribute financially to their own education because they will better appreciate the value of their college education. Other parents ask their kids to contribute to their education because they cannot afford to bear the expense completely. In either case, this can make a big difference in the amount you need to save for your retirement. When it s one or the other What happens when there just isn t enough disposable income each month to fund both your children s education and your own retirement? Many financial experts agree that retirement funding should be your first priority. Here s why. Your kids can always borrow money to go to school. You can t borrow to retire. Your kids have decades ahead of them after they graduate to make money and pay the loans back. You have decades ahead of you when your savings need to support you. Additionally, your kids can work through college and take longer than the traditional four years. You may be forced to retire early due to poor health or a bad economy. A personal decision If you cannot fully fund both your retirement and savings goals, your first step should be to work with a financial advisor who can help you make the right choices for your personal circumstances and maximize the potential of what you can invest. Michael Beck and Douglas Stocklan are Financial Advisors with RTN Financial and Retirement Group located at RTN Federal Credit Union. They can also contact Dan Durant, RTN Business Development Officer at 781-736-9887 or ddurant@rtn.org for information about supporting Walk Home. Over the past few years, with the generous support of our community, Walk Home has raised more than $60,000 for Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. We appreciate your involvement in making this event a great success. Five Reasons to Support Walk Home Funds raised help support children living in poverty stay in school Every $250 raised means the Coalition can give a bed to a low-income student who doesn t have one of his/her own Students can earn community service credits for school Business owners can get visibility for their businesses while helping others Donations are tax deductible register at rtn.org The Real Face of Homelessness Tina Giarla is a student at Salem State College, works a parttime job, and has an internship at Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless as a Youth Advocate, a subject she knows very well. Tina Giarla From eighth grade through high school, Tina was homeless. Both her parents had substance abuse problems, which led to her father s early death and her mother s incarceration. Her parents situation left Tina an unaccompanied youth a young person not living with a parent or guardian. Tina spent time at the homes of her relatives and friends while attending school, covering up the fact that she was homeless. Despite Tina s difficult life, she studied hard and excelled at school, which was her refuge, and participated in extracurricular activities. With the help of a trusted guidance counselor, Tina is earning her college degree and now speaks about her experiences to advocate for other homeless youth. Tina s triumphant spirit and compelling story serve as an example of how support for Walk Home and Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless directly impact the lives of homeless kids and families.! 5
