Felix Where did you study? University of Warwick What was your course? MMorse Which office is home? Guildford Sarah Where did you study? University of Newcastle What was your course? BSc Mathematics Which office is home? Bristol I joined Punter Southall in 2012 as part of the graduate scheme, following an internship placement the previous summer. I had just graduated and, like many students, was looking for an opportunity which would allow me to enter into a professional environment whilst developing my skills. I decided on Punter Southall mainly for its consulting emphasis, the focus on communication and advising clients allows for more varied work, as well as the chance to be involved in client meetings and presentations, all of which I experienced as part of my summer placement. In what is a very professional environment, the balance with the social side is great, which I think is very important when you are first thrust into a full-time career. A lot of people at Punter Southall have gone through both the internship and graduate programme. This provides a great source of experience and a lot of help and advice where needed. Beginning a career on the graduate programme gives you a solid and supportive base which puts you in a good position for future development. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Punter Southall and, although the business has grown significantly since I joined, it still feels like the same friendly, client focused company to which I was attracted over 13 years ago. I started my career in the Guildford office, progressing from a new graduate, to one of four team leaders of the two actuarial teams over a period of ten years. The team leader role is something I find very rewarding as it gives me the opportunity to help people to progress their careers, the way others helped me. I believe that regular contact with colleagues in other offices is very important as it means people have exposure to a wide range of viewpoints and different approaches. For a new graduate, this starts from day one as you will meet fellow new graduates across as part of your induction courses. This contact continues throughout your career via regular training courses with peers, membership of technical committees, our peer review process and organised events such as our annual pensions conference or qualified actuaries days. 6
