Pennsylvania Amend Instructions: NOTE: If you used TurboTax CD/Download product to prepare and file your original return: Be sure to update your product. Go to Online and click on Check for Update. 1) Open your 2011 TurboTax return. 2) Go to State Taxes tab and click Continue. 3) Click the Edit button to open your Pennsylvania Part-Year Resident return.
4) Now that you are in your state s interview, if you are using the TurboTax CD/Download, click on the Show Topic List (in upper right hand corner of the screen.) 5) If you are using the TurboTax Online product, click on Tools (in upper right hand corner of the screen) and then click on the Topic List in the Tools Center. 6) Scroll down the Topic List to State Taxes/ Pennsylvania/ State Interview/Additional Forms/ Other Forms and click on Amended Return.
7) On the Change a Previously Filed Pennsylvania Return screen, click Yes. 8) On the Verify Your Original Refund or Balance Due from Pennsylvania screen, confirm your original refund or balance due and click Continue. If you received a larger refund from Pennsylvania, enter the amount. If you received a smaller refund, do not change the amount showing on the screen. If you had a balance due and did not pay the entire amount due, enter the amount you paid.
9) On the next two Tell Us About Your Originally Filed Return screens, verify the amounts. If not correct, enter the amount on your original return. DO NOT make a change here for your amended return. We will do that later. Click Continue. 10) On the Amend Tax Return Statement screen, enter the following: The original Pennsylvania return did not include income earned in another state that was received while living in Pennsylvania. This amended return includes that income. 11) Click Continue. 12) On the Any Special Pennsylvania W-2 Situations? screen, check None of the above and click Continue.
13) On the Prepare W-2 Additional Information Statement, click Skip Statement button. It s time now to make the changes for your amended return. 1) On the You ve Finished Your Pennsylvania Return screen, click Update button on Income and Adjustments. 2) On the Compensation Summary screen, click the Edit button for the W-2 that is NOT INCLUDED in your original Pennsylvania tax return.
3) On the Verify This Income screen, check the box to make this income taxable in PA and click Continue. 4) The Compensation Summary screen appears again. Click the Edit button on the same W-2 that you indicated is taxable in PA.
5) This time the Verify This Income screen appears. Check the box for I need to make an adjustment to the taxable amount of this income. Click Continue. 6) On the Adjust This Amount screen, enter the amount of these wages that you received while living in Pennsylvania. Click Continue.
Now you have to answer some questions about the Pennsylvania Special Tax Forgiveness Credit. 1) If you are using the TurboTax CD/Download, click on the Show Topic List (in upper right hand corner of the screen.) 2) If you are using the TurboTax Online product, click on Tools (in upper right hand corner of the screen) and then click on the Topic List in the Tools Center. 3) Scroll down the Topic List to State Taxes/ Pennsylvania/ State Interview/Tax and Credits and click on Special Tax Forgiveness Credit.
4) On the You May Be eligible for a Special Tax Credit screen, check Yes, I d like to try it and get it and click Continue. 5) On the What is Your Eligibility Status? screen, answer the question and click Continue. 6) On the Dependent on Someone Else s Return screen, answer the question yes or no.
7) On the Did You Have Any Income From These Sources screen, enter the amount of income you earned while not a resident of Pennsylvania and click Continue. Let s answer some final questions about possible out of state taxes paid and the related Pennsylvania credit. You added wages, earned in another state, to your Pennsylvania amended return. If you paid tax on those wages in that other state, follow these steps. Otherwise, scroll down to Now Time to Print and Mail. 1) Go back to the Topic List. 2) Scroll down the Topic List to State Taxes/ Pennsylvania/ State Interview/Tax and Credits and click on Credit for Tax Paid to Another State. 3) On the Credit for Tax Paid to Another State screen, click Yes button.
4) On Other State or Country screen, click Another State button. 5) On the Report Other State screen, choose the other state in the drop down list and click Continue. 6) On the Enter Tax Paid to another state screen, enter the amount of tax paid to that state you indicated. Do not enter the refund you received or the amount paid for that state. Look on the state return you filed for the Total Tax. In the example below, the tax paid to New York has been entered.
7) On the Any Double-Taxed income from another state screen, enter the income amounts taxed by both Pennsylvania and the other state you indicated, for example the wages you are adding to this amended return. In the example below, the New York wages were $50,000 of which only $30,000 was earned while living in PA. Scroll down to the Tax Due to (other state) on income above line. In the (other state) amount column, enter the tax paid same amount as prior screen. For the Your Amount column, enter the portion of the other state tax that applies to the Your Amount entered above. You will figure out the portion by taking the your amount wages divided by Other state amount and the multiplying that by the tax due in other state. In the example below, $30,000 (Your amount wages) divided by $50,000 (NY Amount wages) = 3/5. Then 3/5 of $3,000 (Tax due NY) = $1,800. 8) On the next Income From.screen, enter the name of the company and how much you received from that company. Click Continue.
Now it s time to print and mail your amended state return. Note: You cannot electronically file an amended tax return. Follow these steps: 1) Go to the Print & File tab and click on Print/Save for Your Records. 2) On the Print and Save Center, click on Print Returns
3) On the Print screen: a. Choose All official forms required for filing b. Uncheck the box for 2011 Federal tax return c. Check the box for Pennsylvania state tax return. d. Uncheck the box for any other state tax return. 4) Click Print button 5) The forms to mail will print.
6) The instructions will indicate any balance due that you need to pay or refund that you will receive. It will also include the address to mail the return. 7) Note: If you owe money and the payment voucher prints out, DO NOT include the payment voucher when you mail the return. It does not show the correct amount to pay. 8) If you had an out of state tax credit on your PA return, a copy of the other state will also print out. Attach it with the PA return. 9) Be sure to sign the PA return and any other state tax return that printed. 10) Don t forget to print out an extra copy to keep for your files.
