The headline and core annual rates thereby declined for the seventh consecutive month to register the lowest rates since October and April 216, respectively. This decline was supported by tighter real monetary conditions, aimed at containing underlying inflation including potential second-round effects of supply shocks, and was accelerated by favorable base effects since November 217. Monthly headline inflation in February 218 registered.3 percent, after registering negative rates in December 217 and January 218 at -.2 percent and -.1 percent, respectively. Monthly headline inflation had stabilized in the period between August and November 217 at around 1.1 percent, affected notably by upward adjustments of regulated prices. Source: Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics and Central Bank of Egypt. 1/ Published by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. 2/ Computed by the Central Bank of Egypt. 3/ CAPMAS publishes three CPI series: (1) the CPI for urban areas which include Cairo, Alexandria, urban Lower Egypt, urban Upper Egypt, Canal cities and Frontier governorates, (2) the CPI for rural areas, and (3) the CPI for All areas. Numbers quoted in this note refer to CPI-Urban. / It is important to underscore that the monthly percentage changes of both headline and core CPI between September 29 and July 21 do not match rates of changes presented in previous inflation notes given the replacement of the 8 th CPI series by the 9th series starting from August 29 (Full details are discussed in the Technical Appendix of the August 21 Inflation Note). 1

Central Bank of Egypt Monthly headline inflation in February 218 was driven by higher core food prices, mainly due to poultry and rice prices, which was partly offset by seasonally lower clothing prices. Meanwhile, prices of red meat have been broadly stable since September 217 after recording continuous increases since April 216. Given price increases of core CPI items, monthly core inflation inched up by. percent in February 218, in line with its average since August 217. 2
