When you receive your pay stub either via e-mail or the postal service you should be sure to review the information. Below is an explanation of your Earnings Statement. Pay Date The date your monies are direct deposited and/or check is dated Start Period The start date of the pay period you are being paid for. End Period The end date of the pay period you are being paid for. Under Earnings: Code Column These are the codes that you are being paid for during the pay period. SAL Salaried if you used no other codes your annual salary will show in the amount column. If you used PTO it will break it down to an hourly rate. (Your annual Salary divided by 52, divided by 40 equals your hourly rate). REG Regular Wages FLS Fair Labor Standard (1½ times your rate of pay or overtime pay) HOL Specific assigned direct care employees (depending on the nature of their position and department), who are scheduled to work on designated holidays, will be paid at time and one half. Staff is eligible for this rate of pay if working between the hours of 12:01 AM to midnight on all recognized holidays. Staffs that do not actually work on a holiday but elect to use PTO are compensated for the PTO at straight pay. The designed holidays are: a. Easter* b. Memorial Day* c. Independence Day* d. Labor Day* e. Thanksgiving* f. Christmas Day* and Christmas Eve g. New Year s Day* and New Year s Eve *Program Offices are closed for the observance of the indicated holidays. Hours Column The number of hours being paid for each code that pertains to hours Amount Column The total Gross Amount being paid Code Column: FICA Federal Insurance Contributions Act Tax: imposed by the federal government on both employees and employers to fund federal programs that provides benefits for retirees, the disabled, and children of deceased workers. FICA is the combination of SS & Med. Med Medicare Tax: this amount is withheld so you ll be covered by Medicare when you reach age 65. The amount withheld from you pay is 1.45% of your
gross income. CSG pays an extra 1.45% that doesn t come out of your check. There are no income limits. All covered wages are subject to Medicare tax. SS This is a set amount required by the government to be withheld from each pay check. The percentage is 6.2%. The tax levied on both employers and employees used to fund the Social Security program. Social Security tax is usually collected in the form of payroll tax or self-employment tax. The Social Security tax pays for the retirement and disability benefits received by millions of Americans each year. Federal (income) Tax -. Gross pay is all of an employee's pay before deductions. If the employee has a pretax deduction, such as a traditional 401(k) or a section 125 health plan, as an employer, you are supposed to deduct the benefit from the employee s gross pay before withholding the respective tax. If the employee has no pretax deductions, the entire gross pay is taxable. The amount is based on a tax table and how an employee filed out their W-4. State - This is the State Income Tax (Pennsylvania State Income tax of 3.07%) of taxable income. Local This is the tax that is based on where you live not where you work. The earned income tax is a tax levied as a percent of earned income. The Local Tax Enabling Act requires every employer having a factory, workshop, branch, warehouse or other place of business within the taxing jurisdiction to register with the earned income tax officer of that district. All employers with work sites within the taxing jurisdiction are required by law to deduct the earned income tax from their employees at that site if the tax is listed in the Local Tax Register. If the municipality and/or school district s tax rates are not listed in the Register, employers are not required to withhold earned income taxes from employee wages. (if you move throughout the year you may have more than one local tax). The amount Column is the amount being deducted from your Gross Wages The Year to Date column is the amount that has been deducted for the current calendar year from your gross wages. Total Line: Total hours paid, total gross amount and the total taxes being deducted.
