Traders were liquidating their short positions and as a result, the market went down. The root cause of this is that most of the planting is done for this crop year and enough moisture and good temperatures have helped the crops emerge. Corn, as of right now, is rated at 80% good to excellent, and soybeans 75%. The traders reacted to this news providing end-users a golden buying opportunity. Weather is now and will remain the most important driver as it usually is this time of year. Soybean oil does not necessarily move down based on the direction of meal or beans. In fact it can react much differently but traders have reduced their net short positions for soybean oil, but also crude oil has come down too, and the two are related from an energy standpoint. Also, crushers are reportedly crushing beans - for meal - at a record pace which is filling up the soybean oil tanks which helps, not only the futures for soybean oil, but also the cash value. Watch out for Canola! The good news is the crop is in the ground for Canola, but China has been importing record amounts of Canola and do not show any signs of slowing their demand. This means higher cash values here for Canola as supplies will get tighter and tighter as the summer progresses. Palm oil moved down along with soybean oil, but also adding weight to the palm market is the Indian import tariffs that have failed to materialize. * Used as the indexing unit of measure for this exchange rate Commodity Information: Commodity information found in this report is publically available.
