Choosing the Right Investment Strategy for You To help you meet your investment goals, the Plan offers you a range of options. You can select a mix of investment options that best suits your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. Fidelity offers approaches to investing for everyone, from those who prefer to handle everything themselves to those who want others who prefer Professional Investment Management. Target Date Funds Help Take The Guesswork Out Of Investing The Plan offers the Fidelity Freedom Funds Class K, which provide a blend of stocks, bonds, and short-term investments within a single fund. Each Freedom K Fund s asset allocation is based on the number of years until the fund s target retirement date. The Freedom K Funds are designed for investors who want a simple approach to investing for retirement. Target date funds are designed for investors expecting to retire around the year indicated in each fund s name. The investment risk of each Target date fund changes over time as the fund s asset allocation changes. The funds are subject to the volatility of the financial markets, including equity and fixed income investments in the U.S. and abroad, and may be subject to risks associated with investing in high-yield, small-cap, commodity-linked, and foreign securities. Principal invested is not guaranteed at any time, including at or after the fund s target date. Build Your Own Investment Option Portfolio When it comes to mutual funds, Fidelity has a longstanding commitment to research and performance. By investing your contributions at Fidelity, you have a wide range of investment options, all categorized in an easy to understand format. You can choose among investments and different asset classes to develop your own portfolio to match your time horizon and tolerance for investment risk. The investment options available through the Plan include conservative, moderately conservative, and aggressive funds. You can change your allocations after we receive your first contribution and enroll you to build your portfolio at the same time you are being enrolled in the Plan. A complete description of the Plan s investment options and their performance, as well as planning tools to help you choose an appropriate mix, are available online at Fidelity NetBenefits at netbenefits.com/usm. Review and choose from the Plan s investment options. If you do not select specific investment options in the Plan, contributions will be invested in the Fidelity Freedom Funds Class K with a target retirement date closest to the year you might retire, based on your current age and assuming a retirement age of 65, at the direction of the Plan Sponsor. Above all, we want you to know that Fidelity is here to help. If you have questions about the available investment options and/or want help selecting your investments, please call Fidelity Investments toll free at 1-866-715-5959, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern time. The University System of Maryland Plans Investing for retirement is one of your most important financial goals. The University System of Maryland is dedicated to offering you the best possible retirement plans for your long term investment needs. Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) The ORP is administered by the State of Maryland to those eligible to participate and is the base retirement plan to which your employer contributes on your behalf. The State of Maryland s contributions are an important part of your overall retirement savings. You are eligible to receive employer contributions based on your position, which you decide how best to invest for your future goals. Participating in the ORP and receiving other benefits, such as Social Security, may help cover essential living expenses in retirement, but that may not be enough to finance the lifestyle you have in mind. Consider taking advantage of your employer s supplemental retirement plans. 403(b) Supplemental Retirement Plan Through payroll deductions, you can contribute additional pretax funds to a supplemental plan above and beyond what is contributed to the ORP, or the 457(b) Plan, up to the IRS limits. 457(b) Supplemental Retirement Plan Through payroll deductions, you can contribute additional pretax funds to a supplemental plan above and beyond what is contributed to the ORP, or the 403(b) Plan, up to the IRS limits. 7
