I have a strong interest in actuarial modeling. With my background and experience, I believe I can add value to the Modeling Section, the profession, and the industry on modeling related topics such as the following: Properly modeling an ever changing landscape of products and product features. Model governance and controls, which have become much more important in the aftermath of the financial crisis. Actuarial transformation. Corey A. Carriker, FSA, MAAA Senior Manager Deloitte Consulting LLP Minneapolis, MN Corey is a Senior Manager with Deloitte Consulting and serves as the U.S. modeling lead for Deloitte. With over 15 years as a life insurance actuary, Corey has direct experience developing, delivering, and maintaining actuarial models for a wide variety of business needs spanning: experience studies, valuation, ALM, capital, risk, planning, pricing, Monte Carlo simulation, stress testing, and operational risk models. In addition to his model development expertise, Corey has worked with companies to modernize and refocus their modeling services through redesign of the modeling function and development process, through systems automation, and through the development of new systems strategies. Throughout his career, Corey has had the opportunity to work and network with modelers in the life, health, P&C, and retirement industries, as well as with those from Canada, Europe and Asia. This broad exposure has afforded Corey new perspectives on the opportunity to modernize and enhance modeling practices across the industry. Corey is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and has a B.S. in Actuarial Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Zohair Motiwalla, FSA, MAAA Principal and Consulting Actuary Milliman Seattle, WA Zohair is a principal and consulting actuary with the life insurance consulting practice of the Seattle office of Milliman. He joined the firm in 2007. Zohair has extensive experience in the fixed annuity and variable annuity spaces and specializes in helping clients develop models to support U.S. statutory and GAAP financial reporting requirements. In recent years, he has also worked with many companies in the areas of model validation and governance, benchmarking, stochastic modeling, mergers and acquisitions and market consistent embedded value. Prior to joining Milliman, Zohair worked at a large life insurance company in a financial reporting role. He is a frequent speaker at Society of Actuaries meetings, focusing on modeling techniques and financial reporting topics in particular. Zohair is a member of the Modeling, Financial Reporting, Investment and Joint Risk Management Sections. He has also participated in a number of SOA sponsored research projects, both as an author and a member of the Project Oversight Group. Zohair is an active member of the American Academy of Actuaries Variable Annuity Working Group. For the last six years, he has also volunteered as a mathematics tutor at local elementary schools, helping students in Grades 3-5. I have always been interested in the development, operation, validation and governance of actuarial models. After having worked at an insurance company and (over the last 10 years) in actuarial consulting, I am lucky enough to have been exposed to a wide variety of approaches to actuarial model life cycles. My hope is that by serving on the Modeling Section Council I can pass on what I have learned to section members and others, and at the same time, continue to learn from my colleagues. Lastly, I also welcome the opportunity to collaborate on research projects on any modeling related topics. Isaac Maycotte, FSA, CERA, MAAA AVP Actuarial Financial Reporting Global Atlantic Financial Group Southborough, MA I have a varied background including roles in pricing, valuation, enterprise risk management, asset/liability modelling, and asset/liability management. In most of my roles I have been involved in model development/creation or optimization. Currently I am responsible for the valuation and modeling of a block of VAs at Global Atlantic Financial Group. This would be my first volunteer experience with the Society of Actuaries.
I am running for a seat in the Modeling Section Council because I think it s important to give back to an organization that has done much to further our profession. Vikas Sharan, FSA, FIA, MAAA, CFA Manager Ernst & Young Philadelphia, PA Vikas is a skilled actuarial professional with more than a decade of experience in the life and annuity insurance industry, with a focus on financial modeling and financial reporting. Apart from focusing on technical issues surrounding actuarial modeling, Vikas also specializes in areas related to model risk such as model governance and model validation. Vikas has assisted a number of clients through consulting engagements on a wide range of projects such as: model implementation, model validation, model optimization, modeling of new financial reporting requirements (PBR, AG43), implementation/assessment of model risk management framework, and conduct industry surveys. With actuarial models getting more and more complicated I would like to use my experience and skill set to help the profession identify changes in the modeling area and provide education opportunities to the section members. Shar Choi, ASA, ACIA Director PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Boston, MA I am one of the modelling team practice leaders of the life actuarial services for PwC in the Boston office. Built the team from a team of 1 to over 10 in three years. My role is to lead the team to provide modelling support for various consulting engagements. I have experience of building complex conversion models with various actuarial software eg. AXIS, MoSes, Prophet, etc. An example is the building of an integrated model used for multiple reporting purposes such as: Canadian GAAP, US GAAP, EV, Asset Adequacy Testing, Economic Capital, as well as new business profitability analysis. I have built valuation and pricing models for financial reporting, ALM, M&A, litigation and new market entries, etc. Prior to working in Boston, I was head of Actuarial Support Center with AIA in Asia and head of actuarial modeling in PwC Shanghai. My experience was to build a team, and led them to carry out various modeling projects for more than 10 different countries in Asia. I have witnessed firsthand on some of those countries undergone the transformation of their insurance regulation and gained
valuable lessons and insights. I started my actuarial career in Canada, where I formed the foundation of my modeling skills. I had held key positions for actuarial areas as well as in a finance role. Over the years, I had helped out industry events when I am in the host cities. Now I want to do more. I have volunteered on financial education with young children in schools, and various volunteer work such as meals & wheels, and old age homes. Having spending most of my actuarial career in actuarial modelling, I have gained experience in a large variety of modelling projects in various countries. I want to share my learning and perspectives by working in the Modeling Council. I believe everyone counts. If I am elected, it would be my opportunity to contribute to our profession. Robert Crompton, FSA, MAAA Vice-President Actuarial Resources Corporation Alpharetta, GA I have been a consultant for the past 30 years, working at accounting firms and consulting firms. I have worked on audits, model validation, acquisitions, product work and expert witness testimony. Most recently I have been helping companies with data visualization and with implementation of End-User-Computing controls. I am currently a member of the following sections: Financial Reporting Investment Modeling Reinsurance Tax Over the past two years, I have written six articles for section newsletters, including two for the Modeling Section newsletter. I am a frequent speaker at actuarial meetings, and in 2016 I was one of the Outstanding Speakers at the Valuation Actuary Symposium. President, Southeastern Actuaries Conference, 2000 2001 Models are the heart and soul (and maybe the pancreas, too) of actuarial work. Over the years, my work in audit, internal audit, model validation and End-User-Computing compliance has given me a perspective on models that may be beneficial in guiding the activities of the Modeling Section.
