Taylr Institute fr Teaching and Learning Educatinal Develpment Unit OVERVIEW SETTING UP GRADEBOOK IN D2L This handut is a supplement t the tutrial vide lcated at: www.vime.cm/107951745 The fllwing 4 sectins will help yu set up yur gradebk. The sectins crrelate t persistent the menus in Grades as shwn belw. T get t Grades, lgin t yur curse, chse Assessments and then Grades in the red navbar. Sectin 1 (page 1): Helps set up basics settings. Nte: These settings and thers can als be fund by clicking n the right buttn n the Sectin 2 (page 2): Sectin 3 (page 4): Sectin 4 (page 6): - Create r cpy a letter grade scheme - Create grade bk items/categries - View student gradebk SETUP WIZARD It is a gd idea t g thrugh the Setup Wizard t make sure the settings yu want are enabled. All f the ptins in the Setup Wizard are als available in the menu. If yu wish, yu can use that ptin instead f the wizard. Yu can use the settings menu t make chances later. Click n, click Start. Step 1: The mst cmmn ptin is Weighted. If yu assign a % t each cmpnent f yur curse, use this ptin. Yu will still be able t assign hw many pints yu wish t grade the item ut f. Step 2: Chse if yu want the ability t ptentially adjust a student s final grades (at the end f the semester) frm what D2L has calculated as their average. Step 3: Chse if yu want D2L t autmatically treat ungraded marks as a 0 r fr them t be excluded frm calculatins. Nte: We recmmend that yu chse Drp ungraded items as Treat as 0 will nt allw yu t excuse students frm an assessment. 1 P a g e
Step 4: If yu d nt have a letter grade scheme in by default then yu can just skip this step (we will cver it in the next sectin). Step 5: Chse hw many decimal places yu want visible in yur grade bk (just t yu, nt the student) Step 6: Chse the default settings fr hw students see their grades. Yu can change these settings fr individual items later if necessary. Pints Grade: Shws students their raw scre Weighted grade (if applicable): Shws the item weight ut f the curse ttal. Grade Scheme Symbl/Clur: Will shw the assciated scheme if it has been set up. If n scheme is set up, it will shw the percentage f their raw scre. Final Grade Calculatin: It is nt recmmended t shw the final grade t students in D2L, as it is nt their fficial grade (this will cme frm PepleSft). Step 7: Review yur selectins. Click Finish. LETTER GRADE SCHEME By default, a simple percentage scheme is used and visible under schemes. It is suggested that yu set up a letter grade scheme crrespnding t what is utlined in yur curse syllabus. Sme faculties have a standardized grading scheme preppulated in this area. If this is the case, simply click the grey check mark t make it the default scheme. T create a new letter grade scheme (an example is shwn belw): In Grades, click Chse New Scheme By default, D2L has 3 ranges by default; a standard letter grade scheme will require 12. Add an additinal 9 ranges by entering 9 and then clicking Add Ranges. 2 P a g e
Fill in the fields fr each clumn: Symbl Clumn: Enter the Symbls (starting with F and wrking yur way t A+) Start %: Enter the value that that letter grade range starts at. Clur (ptinal): Chse a clur t be assciated with that letter grade. Assigned Value % (ptinal): Only if yu want t be able t assign letter grades (nt numeric values) frm a drp dwn list in yur gradebk (t be setup later). This value is what D2L will use t numerically calculate that scre fr a student s final average. If yu plan t always create a numeric grade bk item, yu can leave this clumn blank. Click Save and Clse. Click n the grey checkbx t set yur scheme as the default. T cpy a previusly created scheme frm anther curse in which yu are an instructr: In Grades, click Under Mre Actins, chse Cpy Search fr the curse that cntains the letter grade scheme yu want t cpy. Chse the letter grade scheme and click Cpy Give that scheme a new name Click n the grey checkbx t set yur scheme as the default. 3 P a g e
MANAGE GRADES CREATE YOUR GRADE BOOK In yur gradebk, yu can create Items and Categries. We will first g thrugh hw t create Items, then shw yu hw t create Categries, which will cntain individual Items. Categries are simply a way t grup Items if needed. Categries are useful if yu want t drp the highest r lwest items within that categry, r if yu wish t simply keep yur items IMPORTANT: If yu use Categries, yu need t set up the Items within a categry different frm if they were n their wn. All the items within the Categry must add up t 100%, nt the weight f the verall curse weight that yu wuld put if nt within a Categry. The fllwing chart helps illustrate the difference. rganized. Yu will initially see ne r tw rws that D2L autmatically creates fr Final Grade calculatins. Lab #1-50% Click New, then chse Item. Lab #2-25% Lab #3 25% Chse Numeric (mst ppular) fr items that yu Sum f items in Cat. will be assigning a numeric scre t the student. Nte that 100% this ptin cannt be changed later. 4 P a g e
Selectbx will allw yu t chse a letter grade frm a drpdwn menu, n numeric scres will be assigned. Nte that Selectbx will nly be available if yu have created a letter grade scheme. Under the Prperties tab: Name: Name students will see Shrt Name: Name that will g in yur gradebk Categry: If yu wish t place this item in a Categry Maximum Pints: What this item will be graded ut f Weight: What percentage this item is wrth in the curse. Can Exceed: Allws a self-graded item (Quiz, etc.) t be calculated ver 100% Bnus: This ENTIRE item is a bnus item. It wn t be cunted twards the veral calcualatins. If a student scres 100% n this bnus, they will recive a bnus f the Weight yu have assigned the Item. Display ptins (nt shwn in screensht): Here yu can veride the default view details that have been chsen in fr bth student and persnal views. NOTE: By default, all grades entered are immiditely visible t students. Yu may want t restrict visibility, fr example, t have the grades shwn t students nly after everynes grades have been entered. This allws us Additinal cntrls are in the Restrictins Tab: Here yu can set visibility ptins fr the grade item t students. It can be permanantly visible r hidden, r yu can set a date range. Click Creating a Categry: In Grades, click n. Click New, then chse Categry. Set the Weight f the Categry (relative t the entire curse). The setup will be similar t setting up an Item, with the difference f being able t chse hw yu want t set up the distributin f weight fr Items within the Categry. A useful tl within Categries is the ability t drp the highest r lwest grades in that Categry. T Edit a Gradebk Item r Categry: Click n the drpdwn arrw beside the grade item (in Enter Grades r Manage Grades) and chse Edit. ENTERING GRADES Optin 1: Click n the drpdwn arrw beside an item (in Enter Grades r Manage Grades) and chse. This allws yu t enter grades fr that Item as well as add grup r individual feedback. Yu can als see a change lg in case yu have accidently verwritten a grade. Optin 2: In, click the buttn n the right that says Switch t Spreadsheet view (yu nly need t d this nce). Yu can then enter grades as yu wuld in any spreadsheet prgram, field by field. Be sure t click Save. HINT: Yu can srt users by Grups r Sectins if they have been created.
