Diversification equities fixed income real assets While it can t eliminate risk, diversification (divvying up investment dollars among equities, fixed income, real assets, etc.) may help reduce it, and even enhance returns. How? Because different investments react differently to different events. So if, for example, the equity market dips, owning fixed income may cushion the blow. Likewise, good equity performance may help offset the drag from low fixed income yields. Keep in mind that even a well-diversified portfolio won't guarantee a profit or protect against loss.
s i m p l e A diversified strategy Different investments do well from year to year. And no one can predict the future. But there is a way to prepare for it. Instant diversification A mix of equities (e.g., stocks), fixed income (e.g., bonds), and other asset classes has long been shown to be an important part of enhancing returns over time while reducing volatility.* Portfolio Architect has diversification built in with a risk-weighted combination that may include equities and fixed income, or other asset classes. Those classes may be further broken down into different types of investments within each group. For instance, equity holdings could include ownership in different-sized companies, and fixed income holdings could include corporate bonds as well as government bonds. Automatic rebalancing As time goes on, market performance can shift a strategy s asset class balance so it no longer reflects the initial allocations. Investment professionals periodically rebalance strategies to align with those original allocations and risk tolerance levels. *A well-diversified portfolio won t guarantee profits or protect against loss. Instead, we rely on a sophisticated and differentiated process to incorporate our best thinking into the Portfolio Architect programs. Here is a behindthe-scenes look at our investment process. For example, an equity-heavy strategy could accommodate a high risk tolerance, whereas a fixed incomeheavy strategy could better accommodate a low risk tolerance. Certain asset classes involve material risks in addition to those typically associated with investments. The distinct risks for any investment strategy should be reviewed and understood prior to investing. Certain asset classes involve material risks in addition to those typically associated with investments in large company stocks and government bonds and should be evaluated in terms of the overall allocation, your investment goals, and your tolerance for risk. Investments in the stocks of smaller capitalization companies generally involve greater volatility and liquidity risks than those in larger, more established companies. International investing involves special risks, including currency fluctuations, different financial accounting standards, and possible political and economic volatility. These risks can be higher when investing in less developed, and often less transparent, emerging markets. Investments such as mutual funds which focus on alternative strategies are subject to increased risk and loss of principal and are not suitable for all investors. These types of investments may use aggressive investment strategies, which are riskier than those used by typical mutual funds, and you may lose more money than if you had invested in another fund that did not invest aggressively. Investment grade bonds are subject to risks with regard to interest and principal payments. Speculative grade (also high yield ) bonds have lower ratings that reflect a greater possibility that the issuer s ability to make interest and principal payments may be, or become, impaired. To the extent that no established secondary market exists, there may be thin trading of high-yield bonds, which increases the potential for volatility. In both cases, longer-term bonds typically exhibit more price volatility than shorter-term bonds. Specific sector investing, such as real estate, can be subject to different and greater risks than more diversified investments. Declines in the value of real estate, economic conditions, and changes in tax laws and interest rates all present potential risks to real estate investments. Commodities investing may be subject to a greater degree of market risk including sensitivity to cyclical economic conditions, sudden political events, and adverse international monetary policies as well as exposures to foreign markets and concentrations in certain industries. Although money market funds seek to preserve the value of your investment at $1.00 per share, it is possible to lose money by investing in these funds. These risks are for illustrative purposes and are not comprehensive. The distinct risks for any investment strategy should be reviewed and understood prior to investing. Investments: Are NOT FDIC Insured Have NO Bank Guarantee May Lose Value Investment products are not insured by the FDIC or any other governmental agency, are not deposits of or other obligations of or guaranteed by M&T Bank, its affiliates, or any other bank or entity, and are subject to risks, including a possible loss of the principal amount invested. Accounts may lose value over time regardless of any income they may generate. There is no assurance that any investment strategy will be successful. Asset allocation and diversification does not ensure a profit or guarantee against a loss. Indexes are not available for direct investment. Investment in a security or strategy designed to replicate the performance of an index will incur expenses such as management fees and transaction costs which would reduce returns.
