2 Members Heritage Wants to Help Your Kids Save for the Future A 2017 national survey found that almost 60% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, and almost 40% had none. So, if it s hard for adults, how do you teach your children to save? By turning it into a habit. Studies show that habits formed when you are young tend to stick. It s why you still brush your teeth every day we hope! The theme for this year s Youth Month is The Science of Saving. Using fun, sci-fi-inspired characters, it encourages youngsters to imagine a future where piggy banks fly and giant automatic-saving robots visit credit unions. The science in the theme is not science fiction research shows that when you picture yourself in the future achieving a goal, like buying a car or going to college, saving for it becomes easier. Start small. Help them save for a toy they want. Then sign them up for a youth savings account where they save for far-off goals. You can open an account for your child for as little as $5! Encourage your child to make regular small deposits each week. New membership youth accounts opened in April will receive a $10 deposit from MHCU. 5 Remembering A. Ken Tanner 2/16/1930 12/14/2017 Mr. Tanner joined the Credit Union in 1961. He served on all Credit Union committees over the years, serving as Chairman of the Education and Facility Committees. He served on the Board of Directors from 1963 until his retirement in 2010. He was Co-Chairman from 1963 1965, Secretary 1965 1970, Chairman 1970 1983, Vice Chair 1983 1992 and Chairman from 1992 until he retired in 2010. Upon his retirement from the Board, Ken was honored to be named a Director Emeritus. He was very active in, and President of the Bluegrass Chapter of Credit Unions. He was also a member of the Kentucky Credit Union League, The National Association of Credit Union Presidents and the League of IBM Credit Unions. In 1989, he was awarded the Kentucky League s prestigious Steve Brody Award and was also certified in the Volunteer Achievement Program. He was always involved in legislation affecting credit unions, both in Kentucky and nationally. Ken believed strongly in the Credit Union philosophy of People Helping People, and the cooperative nature of credit unions. His experience and training contributed to Members Heritage being able to continue excellent member service and the development of new services to meet future needs.
