COMMUNITY FOUNDATION for Palm Beach and Martin Counties Your Philanthropy Our Community Better Together a guide for you 1

thank you. 2 yourcommunityfoundation.org

Thank you for understanding the importance of making a positive difference in the causes and communities you care about. Your Philanthropy Our Community Better Together You understand that charitable giving is an incredibly powerful way to make the world a better place for others. You understand the joy derived from doing just that. The opportunities to give are diverse and numerous. You may wish to ensure children a brighter future, foster the arts or secure endangered lands. Whatever change it is you wish to make in the world, we can make that change more impactful and meaningful for you. 3

4 yourcommunityfoundation.org who are we?

Your Philanthropy Our Community Better Together We are the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Each and every day we strive to provide world-class service to philanthropists just like you. Together we have helped those philanthropists give away more than $100 million to make change they want to see in the world. Our record is impressive and includes great progress in serving the hungry, addressing affordable housing and making higher education attainable. 5

your philanthropic impact. We understand the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. That is what happens when we come together to make a difference: Your Philanthropy. Our Community. Better Together. The causes our donors support are as varied as the donors themselves. When they partner with us, they rely on our community expertise to help them identify effective programs that match their passions. Whether it s learning about a pressing community need or an organization that needs help, we know you are looking for the most innovative ideas to make a difference in our community. And, we realize this knowledge is important -- so you can make the right decisions. Charitable gifts are an investment in the future and as such should produce a positive return. After all, charitable gifts carry your name and will forever support your passion. 6 yourcommunityfoundation.org

your philanthropic legacy. 8 yourcommunityfoundation.org

Your philanthropy is an expression of your values. You decide how your money should be invested to make an immediate difference in the lives of others. Our dedicated staff monitors and reports the progress of the important programs you have invested in. Our responsible and careful investment management is structured to seek returns that allows your Fund to grow over time while maximizing the funds available for grant making. Giving back is a value most have learned from their parents a value we hope to instill in all children. We can assist the children and grandchildren of donors with their family philanthropy. Our staff works to ensure this important value is passed down for generations. It is truly our privilege to work in a field in which it is our job to help generous people, like you, make the world a better place. Each day we are driven to make your giving experiences more impactful and more rewarding. We look forward to working with you. Stuart residents James and Valerie Stern are proud of the success they have, and view giving back to the community as an important value. They understand the privileges their children are fortunate to grow up with. I see first hand the children in need. It is up to me to start where I live and make a difference and if everyone did that in their own community just imagine the change we could make in the country and world. -James Stern 9

Establishing Your Fund I want to make a difference... Start Today Choose the assets to use for your philanthropy Start Tomorrow Cash or cash equivalent The simplest gift, but we encourage you to consult your tax professional. Publicly traded securities Gifting long-term, appreciated securities provides you with significant tax advantages including an immediate deduction, avoidance of capital gains and a reduction in estate taxes. The same benefits apply to gifts of closely held stock/business interest. Real estate When you donate a gift of real estate -- vacation home(s), income property or land -- you receive an immediate tax benefit, avoid capital gains and a reduction in estate taxes. Bequest Perhaps the easiest way is to designate the Community Foundation as a beneficiary with a specific dollar amount, or as a percentage of your estate. Retirement plan assets A retirement asset like an IRA account makes an excellent bequest. If the IRA were given to your family, much of the value would be depleted through estate and income taxes. By designating the Community Foundation as the beneficiary, the full value of the gift is transferred tax free at your death. Life insurance Provides an easy option to add to or create your philanthropic gift. Simply name the Community Foundation as beneficiary. Planned gifts Charitable able gift annuities and trusts are options that create your philanthropic legacy and provide income to you or your heirs. When you establish a gift annuity you receive an immediate tax deduction, preferential treatment of potential capital gain taxes and a portion on of the income you receive may be tax free. 10 yourcommunityfoundation.org
