ABOUT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT (SPD) The Sheridan Police Department is the main law enforcement agency in Sheridan, with 30 sworn officers and 18 civilian employees. We are a progressive, community-oriented police department seeking motivated, career-minded individuals to join our team. The department will announce when the application process is open on the Sheridan Police Website, City of Sheridan Website and Sheridan Police Facebook page. The SPD offers a wide array of special interest programs for its officers, including: K-9 Drug Recognition Expert School Resource Officer Bicycle Patrol Detectives Field Training Officer Precision Marksman Chemical Munitions Specialist Instructors in Special Skills REQUIREMENT The Sheridan Police Department is always looking for entry level and lateral transfer police officer candidates. Applicant Requirements: At least 21 years of age, US Citizen, High School diploma or GED, no felony convictions and a valid driver s license. Police Officer Hiring Process: As opening become available, qualified applicants will be contacted to arrange for testing. Candidates will be provided information about the stages of the selection process and the expected duration of the process. Lateral Transfer Applicant Requirements: Applicants eligible for lateral hiring must complete all testing. Experience will be evaluated as part of the candidate's background check to determine its equivalence with the Sheridan Police Department.
Candidates must successfully complete the following: Physical Fitness Test Online Examination Hiring Panel Medical Examination Drug Screening Psychological Evaluation Polygraph Background Investigation Probationary Period: Upon meeting the requirements for the offer of employment a new hire will serve a trial service period of 12 months. Applicants who do not possess a Basic P.O.S.T certificate will be required to attend a 14 week Basic Training at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy in Douglas. Further information regarding the Law Enforcement Academy and its programs can be found on their website at: www.wleacademy.com Upon completion of Basic Training a new hire will then complete a 4-phase field training program, which is a highly structured and closely supervised process. All new officers must complete the program with satisfactory or above performance evaluation. This will be the basis for moving the employee to certified status prior to their patrol assignment Wyoming Peace Officer Certified Applicants Hired at rate he/she would be after 1 year probation (will not be additional raise after year probation) Certified Peace Officers from other States Receive pay increase after FTO/2 week cross certification course
SUMMARY OF BENEFITS Basic Salary $20.92-$21.99 DOE ** As a Peace Officer you will not pay Social Security - equates to 6.2% bump in pay ** Equipment: All uniforms and equipment provided (including.40 caliber Glock) Sheridan Police Department offers a take home vehicle to officers that have completed both the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy and the SPD field training officer program and who reside within a six-mile radius of the department. Shift Assignments: Officers work 12 hour shifts (0600-1800, 1800-0600) three days a week, followed by three days off, we adjust the rotation by a day twice a month to allow employees 2 consecutive weekends off a month. Officers will work approximately 2 months of day shift (0600-1800) and then switch to work 2 months of night shift (1800-0600). The shifts are divided up into teams, teams are selected by command staff, each with a Sergeant, Corporal, Patrol officers and Communications officers. Vacation Leave: Vacation leave for full-time employees accrues as follows: Length of Service Vacation Leave Accrual Rate 0-4 years 10 days annually 80 hours 5-9 years 15 days annually 120 hours 10-14 years 20 days annually 160 hours 15-24 years 25 days annually 200 hours 25 or more years 30 days annually 240 hours Maximum Accrual shall be limited to 240 hours. Paid at 100% when you leave employment Sick Leave: Every full time employee will earn 8 hours of sick leave for each month of service, and may accumulate 960 hours. Upon separation or termination employees will be eligible to convert three days of sick leave for one day of pay.
Attendance Recognition: Any employee who uses less than 3 days of sick leave in the fiscal year receives $25 in Chamber Bucks. These can be spent at local businesses around Sheridan. Family and Medical Leave: For eligible employees, up to 12 weeks of leave during a 12-month period for eligible purposes. Must use accumulated sick, vacation and/or compensatory time prior to beginning unpaid leave Holidays: 1. New Year's Day 2. Presidents Day 3. Memorial Day 4. Independence Day 5. Labor Day 6. Veterans Day 7. Thanksgiving Day 8. Day After Thanksgiving Day 9. Christmas Day 10.Personal Day 80 hours of holiday pay will accrue at the beginning of each fiscal year and can be used throughout the year, or 5 days (40 hours) of remaining time will be paid out at the end of the fiscal year. Rodeo Time: All City employees are granted 4 hours of Rodeo time to be used to attend the parade, because Sheridan Police Department employees generally work during this time Officers get 4 hrs of time to use as personal time before Dec 31. Tuition Reimbursement: The City offers reimbursement for tuition and brooks for pre-approved job related courses. Reimbursement is contingent upon receiving a passing grade of a C or higher.
Wellness Program: Employees have the opportunity to earn up to $250 per year by participating in our Wellness Program. This program consists of a wellness blood draw, online Health Risk Assessment, biometric testing, and a fitness assessment. Optional activities to earn money are tracking fitness activities, wellness education programs, quarterly challenges, preventative wellness checks, and participating in organized fitness activities. Health Insurance: The City offers health insurance to employees and dependent. City pays 80% of the premium for a high deductible plan. Employees may buy up to a lower deductible plan, Coverage begins the first day of the month following hire date. Health Savings Account Contributions by City: $2,500 per year for family coverage/$1,250 per year for individual coverage on the high deductible plan. Dental Insurance: The City pays 100% of dental premiums for employees and dependents. Coverage begins the first day of the month following hire date. Life Insurance: The City pays 100% of premiums for life insurance for full time employees $25,000 and $25,000 AD&D for employee. $2,500 for dependent children 6 months to 19 years ($250 14 days to 6 mo) $5,000 for spouse Optional voluntary life insurance available Vision Insurance: Voluntary vision insurance available for employee and family Retirement & Pension: The City contributes 11.63% towards Law Enforcement Pension plan. Employees contribute 5.57%. Full pension and retirement after 20 years of service.
